Jaylen Brown on Celtics Trade: Chemistry Still a Work in Progress

Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown acknowledges that the team remains a work in progress following several roster changes made near the NBA trade deadline. The Celtics executed a significant trade, sending guard Anfernee Simons to acquire center Nikola Vučević, while also moving Chris Boucher, Josh Minott, and Xavier Tillman in other transactions. Brown highlighted that Vučević is still finding his footing within the Celtics’ system as they continue to adapt.

Adapting to New Roles and Building On-Court Chemistry

After a 111-89 loss to the New York Knicks, Brown spoke about the ongoing process of integrating Vučević into the lineup. Vučević played 23 minutes off the bench, contributing 11 points and six rebounds, though he struggled with his shooting, making just one of six attempts from three-point range. Brown emphasized the need for Vučević to become more assertive offensively and for the team to develop better flow together.

We got to figure out the chemistry a little bit, the flow a little bit,

Brown said, according to Jay King of The Athletic.

We want Vuc to be a little bit more aggressive, looking for him to get going and make him feel confident in taking those shots and where he can catch the ball. I think he’s still learning, but we need him to be aggressive. So we’ll make adjustments, we’ll communicate, we’ll watch film, and we’ll be better for it.

Coach Mazzulla Continues Lineup Experimentation

Coach Joe Mazzulla has kept tweaking his rotations throughout the season, and recent games show no exception. For the fourth consecutive game, guard Payton Pritchard featured prominently with the second unit, but the Celtics faced a minus-27 plus-minus rating while he was on the floor against the Knicks. Despite challenges, Mazzulla indicated that this level of experimentation is familiar.

The same as we’ve done (with the starting lineup) the whole year,

Mazzulla told reporters.

We’ve tinkered with it all year. I think we’re up to 15 or 17 different ones, so nothing’s changed. Everybody on our roster has a chance to impact winning. We have a chance to develop, do different things there, so whether before or after the trade deadline, nothing changes in our approach.

Players Acknowledge Changes Affecting Team Crispness

Guard Derrick White noted that the Celtics’ style of play has shifted since some of the recent moves. The team is not as “crisp” as it was a few weeks prior, when they had more time together since the offseason and start of the regular season to iron out their strategies. Nevertheless, Boston continues to hold a strong position in the Eastern Conference standings.

As crisp as we were maybe a few weeks ago when we’d had the offseason and beginning of the year to kind of figure those parts out,

White explained.

Managing Expectations and Future Outlook as Postseason Approaches

Many doubted Boston’s potential after star Jayson Tatum suffered a ruptured Achilles during the 2025 playoffs. Despite this setback, the Celtics currently boast a 34-19 record, securing third place in the Eastern Conference. The front office has used recent trades not only to save money but to bolster the roster for immediate success. Acquiring Vučević was seen as a move to enhance the team’s chances in the near term.

Adjusting team dynamics midseason often disrupts on-court rhythm, but Mazzulla has several months remaining to refine the chemistry before the playoffs. How quickly the Celtics can synchronize their new pieces, especially with key contributors like Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, and Vučević, will be critical in their pursuit of postseason success.
