The Utah Jazz‘s acquisition of Jaren Jackson Jr. caught many by surprise given the team’s current standing, holding the third-worst record in the Western Conference and featuring Lauri Markkanen as their primary All-Star. Despite this, the Jazz are reportedly aiming to secure favorable odds for the top pick in this year’s draft through this trade involving Jackson Jr.
Following this move, an NBA executive highlighted that the Jazz did not simply rest their roster, as they played all available players during their recent 120-117 loss to the Orlando Magic, according to Marc Stein’s The Stein Line. This executive emphasized the difficulty in directing a team’s in-game player usage.
Utah’s plan appears focused on establishing a strong frontcourt foundation with the tandem of Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen, both signed through at least the 2028-29 season. Jackson Jr., a two-time All-Star and recognized for his defensive prowess, complements Markkanen—an All-Star in 2023 and a consistent 20+ point scorer—by strengthening the team’s defense and frontcourt versatility.
During his time with the Memphis Grizzlies this season, Jackson Jr. averaged 19.2 points per game on 47.5% shooting, along with 5.8 rebounds, 1.0 steals, and 1.5 blocks. In his debut for the Jazz, he contributed 22 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Markkanen led the scoring in that game with 27 points, seven rebounds, and one block. The Jazz currently hold the sixth-best odds to receive the number one selection in the 2026 NBA Draft.
