Cade Cunningham Pays Emotional Tribute to Late Coach

Detroit Pistons standout Cade Cunningham honored his former high school coach, Allen Gratts, following the coach’s sudden passing over the weekend. Gratts, who led Arlington Bowie High School in Texas for 25 years and also served as the school’s athletic coordinator, died unexpectedly at 59. Cunningham dedicated Monday’s game victory against Charlotte to Gratts, reflecting on the profound influence the coach had on his life and career.

Cunningham first gained national attention as a freshman playing under Gratts at Arlington Bowie alongside Kyler Edwards, now a notable player for Texas A&M and Houston. Their teamwork under Gratts propelled Bowie to the District 6A Region I final, marking the start of Cunningham’s rise as a top basketball prospect.

After Detroit’s 110-104 win, Cunningham spoke to reporters about how Gratts shaped both his development on the court and his personal growth.

“My high school coach Allen Gratts passed away last night; I just want to dedicate this game to him,”

Cunningham said.

“Anyone who is watching from back home, we stick together. But Coach Gratts was a big part of my life, and so I’m just thankful for the people that helped me along this journey to get to where I’m at today. I know he’s looking down, but I just wanted to pray for my school, pray for his family, his friends that are involved. And I just hope I continue to make him proud.”

On social media, Cunningham further expressed his gratitude.

“Gonna miss you coach. You built more than players… you built men. Thanks for everything! 🤞🏽”

he posted on Instagram, emphasizing the lasting impact Gratts had beyond basketball.

Cunningham’s Deep Texas Roots and Career Path

Born and raised in Arlington, Texas, Cade Cunningham maintains a strong connection to his hometown, where his basketball journey began. Earlier this season, the entire Detroit Pistons squad returned to Arlington for the retirement ceremony of Cunningham’s high school jersey, honoring his achievements and the foundation laid there.

Following two years at Arlington Bowie, Cunningham transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida, a renowned basketball powerhouse. At Montverde, he emerged as the nation’s No. 1 recruit before signing with Oklahoma State University. After one collegiate season with the Cowboys, Cunningham entered the 2021 NBA Draft, where he was selected first overall by the Detroit Pistons.

Impact on the Pistons and Current Season Performance

Now in his fourth NBA season, Cunningham has been a driving force for the Pistons’ resurgence. He has already earned two All-Star selections and led the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Cunningham played a crucial role in the team’s impressive 30-win improvement between the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons.

Currently, Detroit sits atop the Eastern Conference standings, holding a 5.5-game lead over the New York Knicks. Cunningham is continuing his strong individual performance, averaging 25.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 9.3 assists per game while shooting 46 percent from the field. His contributions were recognized last year when he finished in the top 10 for MVP voting.

The Enduring Legacy of a Coach and Athlete

Cunningham’s tribute to Allen Gratts underscores the importance of mentorship and community in shaping successful athletes. Gratts’s dedication to building not only skilled players but also strong character in his athletes left a lasting imprint on Cunningham’s journey. The heartfelt homage reflects how significant early influences remain throughout a player’s professional career.

As Cunningham continues to elevate his game and lead the Pistons, his coach’s memory fuels his determination. This tribute serves as a poignant reminder of the ties between local roots and global success in sports, highlighting how foundational relationships inspire ongoing achievement.
