In Tuesday’s 136-108 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs, second-year Los Angeles Lakers guard Bronny James recorded a season-high 12 points and six assists, demonstrating notable development in his game. While he did not produce any highlight-reel moments akin to his recent ankle-breaker against former All-Star Victor Oladipo in the G League, Bronny’s defensive impact caught attention, especially as he took on imposing assignments during the game.
Past Rivalry Between Victor Oladipo and LeBron James
The matchup between Bronny and Oladipo carries historical significance due to the intense playoff battles between Oladipo and Bronny’s father, LeBron James. The Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers faced off in consecutive first-round NBA playoff series in 2017 and 2018. LeBron’s Cavaliers swept the Pacers in 2017 but required a full seven games to overcome Oladipo’s squad the following year in a gripping contest. During that 2018 series, Oladipo emerged as a standout two-way talent, posting averages of 22.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.4 steals. Unfortunately, injuries hindered Oladipo’s trajectory in later seasons.
Bronny currently averages 2.3 points, 1.3 assists, and 0.5 rebounds, showing promise with a 42.3% three-point shooting percentage, making 11 out of 26 attempts this season. Although observers remain cautious about his future in the NBA, Bronny is confident in developing into a reliable “3-and-D” contributor, especially emphasizing his defensive skills.

Bronny’s Defensive Role and Growth Within the Lakers
After Tuesday’s game, Bronny spoke at length about his desire to establish himself as a defensive stopper. He highlighted the team’s focus on defense and effort to generate easy scoring opportunities.
“Just think our main priority was just coming out and playing hard and playing defense and trying to get some easy looks on offense in,”
James said.
“So, I think that’s what we try to do and didn’t end up being the way we wanted to, but I think we played well.”
Bronny acknowledged the progress he’s made since his rookie year, attributing improvement to the support from teammates and coaches.
“I feel different, I feel way more comfortable,”
he stated.
“My teammates believe in me. My coaches believe in me. It’s good to get out there and take advantage of the minutes given to me.”
Facing Victor Wembanyama, NBA’s Tallest Player
LeBron James has encouraged his son to model his defensive approach after established players like Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, and Davion Mitchell, who developed into elite defenders despite modest college reputations. Bronny showed similar determination on Tuesday by guarding Victor Wembanyama, the tallest player in the NBA.
Reflecting on the challenge, Bronny said,
“It’s something else for sure. I’m one of the smaller guys on the floor guarding the tallest guy in the league. So, it’s definitely a challenge, but I’m up for anything.”
Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised Bronny’s physicality and defensive effort during his matchup with Wembanyama.
“Well, I think the takeaway, you know, in terms of the physicality that we wanted on defense, he had two really good possessions in the first half against Wemby,”
Redick remarked.
Looking Ahead for Bronny and the Lakers
With the Lakers holding a 32-21 record, the team prepares to face the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday in their final contest before the NBA All-Star break. Bronny’s continued defensive growth will be an area of focus as the Lakers aim to strengthen their roster and playoff positioning. His ability to take on challenging defensive roles at a young age signals potential for a lasting impact in the league.
