Devin Booker Admits Why He’s Really in 3-Point Contest

During this year’s All-Star weekend in Phoenix, Devin Booker is set to take part in the NBA 3-point contest once again, surprising many, including himself. Despite posting a career-low three-point shooting percentage of just 31.1% on 5.5 attempts per game, Booker remains eager to compete in the event.

He acknowledges there is a deeper reason behind his participation beyond just his personal shooting stats.

Booker’s Role as Representative for Suns’ Top Shooters

Booker explained in the locker room after a recent game,

“We’re a 3-point shooting team, so I’m there on behalf of Collin [Gillespie], Royce [O’Neale], and Grayson [Allen].”

He added,

“It’ll be fun. I like the game too. Everything’s earlier in the day now. … I’m already down there, and I can shoot off the rack pretty good.”

The selection reflects Phoenix’s team strategy, as Gillespie, O’Neale, and Allen rank among the Suns’ leaders in three-point attempts, consistently emphasizing spacing and perimeter shooting. Booker’s presence in the contest symbolizes their collective strength from beyond the arc.

Booker’s Previous Success and Upcoming Challenges

Booker is no stranger to the 3-point contest stage, having won the title in 2018 with a record-setting 28 points in the final round. This year, however, he faces tough competition including notable sharpshooters like Damian Lillard and Jamal Murray. His All-Star weekend will also involve playing as a reserve for Team USA, marking his fifth appearance in the main All-Star game.

Despite not matching the shooting volume or percentage of some of his teammates, Booker’s ability to shoot effectively off the rack in a contest setting may give him an edge. Taking advantage of the controlled environment rather than game speed could help him reclaim the title.

Significance of Booker’s Participation for the Suns’ Shooting Identity

Phoenix ranks among the top teams league-wide in three-point makes, attempts, and efficiency, showcasing their commitment to perimeter offense. Booker’s involvement in the 3-point contest strengthens the Suns’ image as a leading shooting team and highlights their depth beyond the arc.

If Booker succeeds in winning the contest again, it will be a nod to the Suns’ collective shooting efforts, sharing credit with Gillespie, O’Neale, and Allen, who have played key roles throughout the season.
