The New Orleans Pelicans faced another challenging night during their home game against the Miami Heat on Wednesday, entering with a disappointing 15-40 record. A promising development for the team, Trey Murphy III’s breakout performance, was abruptly interrupted when he suffered a shoulder injury in the second half and was ruled out for the remainder of the game, according to The Athletic’s Will Guillory.
Trey Murphy III’s Strong Performance Before Injury
Before leaving the court, Murphy III contributed significantly with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting. He also added six assists, four rebounds, and two three-pointers. Despite his efforts, the Pelicans were unable to secure a win, falling 123-111 to the Heat. Zion Williamson led New Orleans with 25 points on an efficient 12-for-19 shooting night.
Murphy III’s Development Amid a Tough Season
While much attention has been on Williamson’s anticipated rise, it has been Trey Murphy III, the former Memphis Grizzlies first-round pick, who has made a substantial leap. This season, Murphy III is setting career-high averages, including 22.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and an impressive 1.5 steals per game. He is shooting 48% from the field and 38% from beyond the arc, close to his best numbers yet.
Pelicans’ Defensive Struggles and Outlook
Despite the encouraging individual progress, the Pelicans continue facing major problems defending opponents. New Orleans allows over 120 points per game, ranking 26th in the NBA, and struggles even more against perimeter shooting, conceding 41.1% of three-point attempts, placing them 29th in the league. However, barring a poor outcome in the upcoming NBA Draft Lottery, the team is expected to improve next season.
