The San Antonio Spurs waived Jeremy Sochan on Wednesday, making the 2023 All-Rookie forward a free agent as he evaluates new opportunities. This development follows unsuccessful trade negotiations before the deadline, leaving Sochan to consider multiple teams interested in acquiring him.
Details Behind Sochan’s Departure from San Antonio
<pJeremy Sochan, the ninth overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, has seen a significant reduction in playing time this season, featuring in more than five minutes per game only twice since early January. The Spurs’ decision to waive him came amid the rising prominence of rookie forward Carter Bryant, selected 14th in 2025, who has shown promising two-way skills and increasing scoring efficiency.
Bryant’s strong shooting performances, including hitting 40% from beyond the arc in his recent games, combined with his defensive contributions such as steals and blocks, created a crowded rotation for San Antonio. This left limited opportunities for Sochan, causing him to fall out of the regular lineup.
Sochan’s Reflections on His NBA Journey
Jeremy Sochan openly addressed the difficulties he has faced lately, acknowledging the emotional toll of his current situation.
“I’m not going to lie to you and say it was rainbows and sunshine all day,”
Sochan said.
“There’s been moments where it’s very hard. I’ve been in the league for four years and this is kind of the first time where this has happened to me. I can think of all the excuses, why and the reasons. But at the end of the day, it’s important for me to remember who I am.”
Despite these challenges, Sochan expressed resilience, emphasizing a mindset focused on continuous effort.
“Even if you can’t see the light, I think if you keep working and put your efforts and your mind in the right place, you’re always going to find it somewhere.”
Coaching Staff Highlights Sochan’s Professionalism Amid Changes
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson praised Sochan for maintaining his professionalism despite limited court time.
“He’s been asked to be the role of defensive disruptor and to be a versatile piece offensively for us, and nothing has changed in that regard,”
Johnson explained.
“I know Jeremy is wanting to play more, like many of the people that aren’t playing as much and I’m glad that he wants that. That’s the competitive mindset that you have to have to be successful in this league.”
Johnson further clarified the decision-making behind Sochan’s absence from the rotation.
“As of right now, he has not been in the rotation and that’s a decision that I’ve made. I expect Jeremy to continue to come to work every day, bring your professionalism and be a great teammate. He’s done exactly that, and that’s what you have to do in this league. Sometimes your opportunities don’t always come from where you think they’ll come or when you think they’ll come.”
Sochan’s Performance and Role with the Spurs
This season, Sochan has played in 28 games, averaging 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and one assist per contest, while shooting a respectable 47.5% from the field. During Victor Wembanyama’s rookie year with the Spurs, Sochan notably filled multiple roles, including a stint at point guard where he recorded a standout game with 31 points and 14 rebounds.

Reflecting on his time in San Antonio, Sochan revealed his emotional connection to the city.
“When I think about my whole life, I’ve been moving all over the place,”
he shared.
“I left home at 15 and this is the first time I’ve been somewhere for more than a year since then. And it’s been four years. I feel like I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears to this city. I’m going to put all of that into wherever I am.”
Future Prospects Following Spurs Waiver
Sources indicate that Sochan is eager to find a team where he can secure consistent playing time now, underscoring his desire to actively contribute on the court. With several franchises reportedly interested, the 22-year-old forward’s free agency could attract considerable attention given his defensive capabilities and versatility.
As the upcoming weeks unfold, Sochan’s next move will be closely watched by analysts and fans alike, with hopes he can find a setting that maximizes his potential and sustains his growth in the NBA.
