Denver Nuggets Face Spencer Jones Contract Crisis

The Denver Nuggets have endured a challenging season marked by a series of injuries that have sidelined nearly their entire starting lineup, including NBA three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, key backup players, and important forwards like Aaron Gordon, Cam Johnson, and Peyton Watson. This turbulent stretch has forced the team to adapt constantly and compete while missing crucial contributors.

Although players such as Cam Johnson and Christian Braun have recently returned to action, the full lineup has not been intact since mid-November, complicating Denver’s search for stability on the court.

Rookie Spencer Jones Emerges Amid Uncertainty

One unexpected highlight has been the rise of Spencer Jones, a rookie who began the season in the G-League but earned recognition through his outstanding performances as a substitute for Aaron Gordon. Jones’ rapid development secured him a spot as an All-Star caliber two-way player and positioned him for a full NBA contract. However, Jones has not yet signed this new deal, and currently remains sidelined under concussion protocol following a head-to-head collision with New York Knicks star Karl Anthony-Towns.

Jones’ last game on his two-way contract was the Nuggets’ double-overtime loss to the Knicks on February 4th at Madison Square Garden. Following that game, Denver had to either send him back to the Grand Rapids G-League team or officially upgrade his contract. His strong contributions made the decision to offer a new contract clear, but the concussion has delayed progress.

Contract Negotiations Add to Concerns for Jones’ Availability

While Jones is listed as questionable for the upcoming matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies at Ball Arena, the main obstacle to his return is the unresolved negotiation between the Nuggets and Jones’ agent. Denver head coach David Adelman has described the aim as reaching an agreement that is fair for both sides.”

If a new contract is finalized soon, Jones will be able to rejoin the team on the court, resolving a key question hanging over Denver’s lineup. Until then, his availability remains uncertain.

With Aaron Gordon out for at least another month due to a hamstring injury, the Nuggets face a shortage of size at the forward position. Without Jones and Gordon, Denver has been forced to play smaller lineups alongside Nikola Jokic and backup center Jonas Valančiūnas. Opponents have exploited this size disadvantage, contributing to the Nuggets losing three of their last four games without Jones, despite his 6-foot-7 frame allowing him to effectively guard bigger players.

If a contract cannot be agreed upon before tonight’s game against the Grizzlies, the two sides will have the entire eight-day All-Star break to continue discussions. Meanwhile, Denver is also monitoring the upcoming NBA buy-out market for potential roster reinforcements.

Potential Consequences if Negotiations Fail

It remains unlikely, but possible, that Denver and Jones might fail to reach a new contract. Should this occur, Jones would become a mid-season free agent, leaving the Nuggets without a crucial player. The team would likely need to sign multiple players from the buy-out market to fill the resulting gaps, a disruption that would complicate Denver’s efforts to build continuity amid roster instability.

This scenario could undermine the Nuggets’ pursuit of a strong playoff position, emphasizing the importance of resolving the Spencer Jones contract situation swiftly and fairly.
