Thunder Brace for Post-Break Without SGA and Jalen Williams

The Oklahoma City Thunder will begin the post-All-Star break part of their season without two of their prominent players, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams, due to injuries. Gilgeous-Alexander is sidelined with an abdominal strain and is expected to be re-evaluated in about a week, while Williams continues to recover from a right hamstring strain, with a recheck scheduled in approximately two weeks.

Additional Player Concerns and Injury Details

Alongside these absences, reserve guard Ajay Mitchell remains out after spraining his left ankle over the break while recovering from his own abdominal strain. Mitchell will be reassessed in around one week. Gilgeous-Alexander, who holds the MVP title, has missed the last five games since suffering his injury on February 3. Meanwhile, Williams, who earned an All-NBA selection last season, initially missed 10 games after his hamstring strain on January 17, returned briefly for a February 9 win against the Los Angeles Lakers, but re-injured the hamstring in the following game versus the Phoenix Suns.

Implications for the Thunder’s Standing in the Western Conference

The Thunder currently enjoy the top position in the Western Conference with a 42-14 record, holding a three-game lead over the San Antonio Spurs. However, the Detroit Pistons have inched ahead in winning percentage with a 40-13 record, intensifying the contest for the league’s best record and home-court advantage through the NBA Finals. The Thunder are preparing for a busy week ahead, with four games scheduled despite the absence of these key players.

“Williams, an All-NBA selection last season, missed 10 games after straining his right hamstring on Jan. 17. He returned for a Feb. 9 road win over the Los Angeles Lakers but strained the hamstring again in the Thunder’s next game two nights later, when Williams scored 28 points in 20 minutes in a road win over the Phoenix Suns.”
