LeBron James played through noticeable knee soreness on Friday night, helping lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a narrow 125-122 victory over the LA Clippers at Crypto.com Arena. Despite the pain, James remained a key contributor as his team secured a crucial win in a competitive matchup.
Managing Injury Amidst Game Pressure
James explained the origin of his knee soreness, revealing it happened during practice the day before the game when he landed heavily after a dunk attempt.
“If I’m a player, I got to make something happen, be productive for our team, and do what I can do,”
James said.
“It happened at practice yesterday during our scrimmage. Went up for a dunk, came down pretty good. A couple minutes into the scrimmage after that it started getting a little sore and started getting a little tight.”
Defense and Teamwork Fuel Lakers’ Effort
The veteran praised the Lakers’ defensive stand as instrumental in the win. He highlighted that both teams shot well, but a few key stops made the difference in the tightly contested game.
“We got a couple more stops. Both teams shot really well, but we were able to get a couple stops. Obviously, Luka was phenomenal offensively and we just needed to get that one in,”
he said.
Personal Commitment to Recovery and Discipline
Reflecting on his approach to physical recovery, James shared how he adapted his lifestyle during past injuries by giving up personal indulgences to aid healing.
“When I was healing from sciatica, I gave up cookies and wine. It’s just part of my makeup to know that I can lock out things and lock in. Being able to take things out that I love helped me give my body the best possible chance to recover,”
James explained.
Building Chemistry With Teammates Enhances Performance
James underscored the importance of developing on-court chemistry, particularly now that the roster is healthy. He noted the significance of having all players available and emphasizing continuous improvement.
“Every game, every second, every minute that we on the floor together, it helps. Tonight was the first game JJ and the coaching staff could look down and know everybody was available. We just have to keep pushing,”
he stated.
Strong Ball Movement Key to Early Success
The Lakers’ fast start was driven by impressive ball sharing, especially during a 41-point first quarter. James praised his teammates for their involvement and patience, referencing how one teammate waited patiently before hitting crucial shots late in the game.

“When we sharing the ball, when we moving the ball, we have 25 plus assists in the game. We want everybody to feel involved. Smart stayed ready, didn’t shoot the ball at all pretty much through the first three quarters and then in the fourth hit big time shots for us,”
James said.
Instinctive Connection With Deandre Ayton on Key Play
James described a notable alley-oop play with Deandre Ayton, emphasizing the intuitive nature of their collaboration.
“AR was able to kick it up to me. I’m just reading the play before it happens. Before I even received the ball, I looked over at Brook, saw a little attention, and knew as soon as I caught it, it was going straight in air to DA and he brought it home for us,”
he recounted.
Respect for Kawhi Leonard’s Persistence
James also acknowledged the toughness and perseverance of Clippers star Kawhi Leonard, regardless of injury setbacks.
“He’s the best. He’s one of the best players ever. I can care less about the injuries. Those things you can’t control. What he’s been controlling is how he comes back and his perseverance every single time. That guy’s awesome. I have nothing but great things to say about him,”
James remarked.
James’ Leadership Strengthens Lakers’ Position in Playoff Race
James finished the game with 13 points and 11 assists, guiding the Lakers to split the season series with the Clippers. Los Angeles improved to 34-21, while the Clippers fell to 27-28. The Lakers now look ahead to hosting the Boston Celtics on Sunday, aiming to build momentum as they push deeper into the Western Conference playoff battle.
