Bronny James Shines Again with Strong Two-Way G League Play

The South Bay Lakers, the G League affiliate of the Los Angeles Lakers, featured a strong showing by several of their developmental players during a back-to-back series against the Texas Legends on Friday and Saturday nights. Among them, Bronny James stood out with an encouraging two-way performance, further establishing his value as a versatile contributor on both ends of the court. This latest stretch came as South Bay secured wins in both matchups, strengthening their position in the playoff race.

Key Contributions Highlighted in Back-to-Back Wins

South Bay kicked off the series with a decisive 127-105 victory on Friday, propelled by Drew Timme’s 25-point effort. Alongside Timme, other two-way players including Chris Manon and NBA assignee Bronny James helped provide a balanced team effort, though rookie Adou Thiero sat out the second night recovering from an MCL sprain. Timme, Manon, and James all returned on Saturday for the rematch, where James delivered one of his best games of the season, helping South Bay to a narrow 104-99 win.

Development of Bronny James’ Two-Way Game

James began the weekend with 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists on Friday, despite mixed shooting efficiency at 5-of-14 from the floor and 1-of-4 from three-point range. His defensive impact, however, was notable with two blocks, a steal, and multiple hustle plays that helped energize the team. One key sequence saw James prevent the ball from going out of bounds, leading to a fast-break bucket by Drew Timme.

In Saturday’s contest, James improved his shooting to 7-of-14, knocking down three three-pointers while tallying 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists over 34 minutes. His defensive intensity persisted with both a steal and a block, reinforcing his role as a dependable two-way player during critical moments.

Timme once again led South Bay with 24 points and six rebounds, while Manon added 13 points, nine boards, and five steals, showcasing the team’s defensive grit. G League standout RJ Davis also continued his strong form, contributing 23 points, seven assists, and two blocks, including five made three-pointers.

Evolution into a More Complete Role on the Team

Entering Saturday’s game, James was averaging 15.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, one steal, and nearly one block per game across six appearances this season, alongside solid shooting splits of 53.6% from the field and 40.6% from beyond the arc. While this marks a slight production dip compared to his late-season surge last year—when he averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 1.9 steals per game—Bronny’s development signals a shift toward becoming a fully rounded two-way player.

Following a notable NBA appearance against the San Antonio Spurs in which he scored 12 points, dished out six assists, grabbed three rebounds, and recorded a block, James emphasized the importance of his defensive role.

“I’d say defensively, that’s my role that I want to excel at,”

he told reporters after the Spurs game.

“We have a lot of guys, Luka, LeBron, AR. Those guys can go get buckets whenever we need them. But they need guys like myself, Vando, Jake, guys who can defend.”

Significance for South Bay Lakers’ Playoff Push

South Bay’s victory improved their record to 13-8, reflecting a strong push toward postseason qualification. The team has now won three consecutive games, with several Lakers prospects, including James, continuing to gain valuable experience during this critical stage. Bronny James’ growing two-way performance not only boosts South Bay’s competitiveness but also provides encouraging signs of his potential impact at the NBA level as the season progresses.
