Charles Barkley Slams Karl-Anthony Towns: “Doesn’t Know Basketball”

NBA legend and broadcaster Charles Barkley did not hold back when addressing New York Knicks‘ big man Karl-Anthony Towns, expressing doubts about his understanding of the game. Barkley highlighted Towns’ inconsistency, especially his frequent choice to rely on outside shooting against smaller defenders instead of using his size advantage inside the paint.

Barkley explained,

“The thing that frustrates me about him,”

said Barkley,

“is that to me, he doesn’t know how to play basketball. What I mean by that is, he’s a terrific seven-foot shooter. The same criticism I had with Joel Embiid. The matchup dictates whether you shoot 3s or go post up. That’s what I mean by not knowing how to play basketball.”

Shaquille O’Neal Voices Concerns About Towns’ Playing Style

Joining the critique, Shaquille O’Neal also expressed his disappointment with Towns’ approach on the court, labeling his style as “soft.” O’Neal emphasized the importance of consistency and decisiveness in Towns’ game, specifically regarding whether he wants to excel inside or outside.

O’Neal remarked,

“I would say this to his face if I were his teammate: he’s playing soft,”

continuing,

“Playing really soft. You’re going to have to decide who you want to be. Inside or outside, but whatever you decide, you have to be consistent. You can’t say, ‘I’m the greatest big man shooter,’ and play like he’s been playing. When he plays like that, me and Chuck don’t have a problem.”

He added further,

“But he gets in foul trouble too much. He plays really silly. Again, if I were on his team, I would look him in the face and say, ‘KAT, we need you. There are big aspirations for the Knicks, and you’re playing soft.’”

Overview of Karl-Anthony Towns’ Career Path

Karl-Anthony Towns was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. During his nine seasons with Minnesota, Towns established himself as a uniquely versatile big man, capable of stretching defenses with his shooting and controlling boards effectively. He won NBA Rookie of the Year in 2016 and earned six All-Star selections.

Towns played a crucial role in leading the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals in 2024, marking the franchise’s first trip that far in two decades. He joined the New York Knicks two seasons ago and helped the team reach the Eastern Conference Finals in his first year, though his performance since then has been uneven.

Inconsistencies and Challenges in Towns’ Current Role

While Towns remains a talented player, his current season with the Knicks is marked by fluctuations in both effort and results. His average of 19.8 points per game this year is the first time since his rookie season he has averaged under 20 points, highlighting a dip in offensive output. Alongside star guard Jalen Brunson, Towns has struggled to maintain a consistent presence, leading to frustration among analysts and commentators.

This inconsistency has sparked discussions about whether Towns can fully capitalize on his abilities and meet the Knicks’ high expectations moving forward.

Implications for the New York Knicks’ Future

The criticism from notable figures like Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal underscores larger questions about Towns’ role and development with the Knicks. As the team aims for deep playoff runs, the pressure mounts for Towns to overcome his hesitations, assert his dominance in mismatches, and deliver more consistently on both ends of the court.

How Towns responds to these critiques and adjusts his playstyle will likely influence the Knicks’ success in upcoming seasons, making his development a key factor in their championship aspirations.
