The Houston Rockets appear to have playoff potential this season, but their inability to close out games remains a critical problem, as was evident during their recent loss at Madison Square Garden. Kevin Durant openly addressed the challenges his team faces in late-game situations, pinpointing a lack of consistent intensity as a key factor in their struggles.
Struggles in Closing Out Games Amplify Team’s Shortcomings
Durant explained,
“In a lot of our games when we’re up 10, 12, 14, we just give it away because we don’t play with that dominant trait.”
He noted a drop in energy after three quarters:
“I thought, in the first three quarters, we played with more pace. In the fourth quarter, we were just stagnant to start. It gave them momentum. We were giving up layups and turnovers. I just think we relaxed a bit coming into the fourth quarter.”
This lack of focus late in games is a persistent issue. Out of 21 total losses this season, Houston has fallen short 16 times in clutch scenarios, where the margin is five points or less in the final five minutes. Despite their solid position in the standings, this pattern places them among the league’s worst performers under pressure.
Durant’s Performance Reflects Team’s Inconsistent Finish
Durant’s individual output in the recent matchup reflected the broader team pattern. He contributed 25 points through three quarters, shooting efficiently and helping the Rockets establish a lead. However, in the final period, his effectiveness waned, shooting just 2-for-7, committing turnovers, picking up fouls, and missing key shots. Although he managed a late three-pointer to bring Houston within one point in the closing seconds, it was insufficient to overcome the earlier mistakes.
Durant Views Setbacks as Opportunities for Growth
Despite the setback, Durant emphasized the importance of learning from these experiences as the Rockets aim to solidify their place among contenders.
“It’s a lesson learned. Something we can keep growing from,”
he said.
“It’s a vital time for us to keep growing and keep getting better.”
The Rockets currently hold a 34-21 record and remain in playoff contention, but their late-game collapses highlight an urgent need for improvement as they navigate the competitive Western Conference landscape.
