Luka Dončić Admits Lakers’ Chemistry With LeBron Needs Work

Luka Dončić openly addressed the challenges the Los Angeles Lakers are facing, focusing on his developing relationship with teammates LeBron James and Austin Reaves. Their difficulties were highlighted on Sunday during a 111-89 defeat at home against the Boston Celtics, where the team struggled to keep pace with one of the NBA’s elite squads.

After the game, Dončić discussed the current state of the Lakers’ on-court cohesion, acknowledging that their offensive performance and defensive efforts need improvement, especially against top-tier competition.

Lakers’ Big Three Facing Growing Pains Amid Tough Matchups

In their second meeting this season, the Lakers were overwhelmed by the Celtics, who imposed their physical playstyle effectively. LA found it difficult to contain Boston’s key players, Jaylen Brown and Payton Pritchard, who combined for 62 points. Pritchard, in particular, had an impressive shooting night, hitting 10 of 14 shots.

The Lakers’ core trio—Dončić, James, and Reaves—managed 60 points, falling short as their team was soundly defeated at home. Frustration was evident among fans, who expressed their discontent in the final minutes.

Los Angeles’ offense was inefficient, converting only 39.1 percent of their shots and making a mere 30 percent from beyond the arc. Their 89-point output nearly matched their lowest scoring game of the season, raising concerns about consistency when their key players are all available.

I think they were very physical, but they were playing great defense, so we need to do better on offense,

Dončić said about the team’s offensive struggles.

We scored 89 points, that’s not like us. So, we gotta be better.

Progress Needed in Team Chemistry and Offensive Synergy

When asked about the development of their teamwork, Dončić acknowledged that the trio has not yet reached its potential. As a six-time All-Star in his first full season with the Lakers, he stressed that they are still working on how best to blend their individual strengths while involving the rest of the team.

I think you see, we’re not there yet,

Dončić admitted.

Like I said, we’re working on it. But there should be big potential about us three playing together.

The Lakers currently stand fifth in the Western Conference with a 34-22 record but rank near the bottom of the league in defensive rating, suggesting defensive lapses have compounded their offensive woes. Additionally, their heavy reliance on the Big Three has led to extended dry spells when these players are off their game.

With only 26 games left in the regular season and the trade deadline behind them, the Lakers face growing pressure to solidify their roster chemistry and performance if they want to maintain realistic hopes for a championship run.

Upcoming Challenge Against the Orlando Magic

The Lakers will aim to rebound in their next home game against the Orlando Magic, who hold a 30-26 record. This matchup presents an opportunity for Dončić, James, Reaves, and the team to demonstrate improved coordination and execution on both ends of the floor as the playoffs approach.
