Kevin Durant, a highly decorated Team USA basketball player and current Houston Rockets star, aims to compete in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. At age 37, Durant is focused on adding another Olympic medal to his successful international career.
Durant Addresses Speculations About His Olympic Future
Durant recently spoke to ESPN to clarify rumors that he might skip the 2028 Olympics, emphasizing that he has not made any decisions about withdrawing from competition.
“You guys, the media, have projected that,”
Durant explained.
“That narrative, where did the last dance thing come from? I didn’t say I wasn’t playing. LeBron said he wasn’t. You didn’t hear that from me or Steph,”
he added, referencing other NBA stars LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
Motivation to Contribute Meaningfully in 2028
While Curry seems unlikely to participate and James has already ruled out the 2028 Olympics, Durant expressed a strong desire to remain a key contributor for Team USA.
“Hell yeah, I want to play,”
Durant said.
“I would love to, but I’ve got to stay on top of my game. I don’t want to just be there; I want to produce on the floor and make Grant and whoever is making the decisions want to put me on the team. I want to prove I can still help the team win.”
He added,
“Today, yeah, I feel like I’ll put my name in that hat.”
Durant’s Olympic Legacy and Current Performance
Durant’s international record is impressive, having participated in five major tournaments with Team USA and earning four Olympic gold medals and one FIBA World Cup gold medal. Despite nearing his late 30s, Durant continues to perform at an elite level in the NBA. This season, he is still among the league’s top scorers, averaging 26.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game while playing for the Houston Rockets.
Looking Ahead to the Impact of Durant’s Possible 2028 Appearance
The prospect of Durant joining the 2028 Olympic squad at age 37 underscores his commitment to maintaining top physical condition and competitive readiness. His potential participation could provide Team USA with veteran leadership and scoring ability. As the Los Angeles Games approach, Durant’s decision will be closely followed, with expectations that he will aim to contribute significantly if selected.
