Selected fourth overall out of Iowa in the 2022 NBA Draft, Keegan Murray initially made his mark as a movement shooter and catch-and-shoot expert, even breaking the rookie record for three-point field goals made. However, he has gradually expanded his skill set to include pull-up jumpers, a reliable mid-range shot, and, notably, defensive versatility.
Despite these improvements, maintaining consistency remains a challenge, as Christensen highlighted during her conversation.
Assessing Keegan Murray’s Potential as an NBA All-Star
Christensen outlined some ups and downs in Murray’s performances, pointing out moments where he excels and others where his play falls flat.
Sometimes he’ll have one really good quarter, or he’ll get subbed out, and then when he comes back in, he won’t have a shot,
she observed.
“That’s something I’d like to see change. I want to see him featured more offensively.”
She stressed the coaching staff’s intentions for Murray to take on a more dynamic role, including rebounding and leading fast breaks, although turnovers and hurried decisions have impeded his growth in these areas.
Doug wants to see him get the rebound, take it in transition, lead the break, and be dominant there,
Christensen said.
In that Orlando game, we saw a lot of it, but he struggled in that component — turnovers, rushed decisions. That’s exactly the kind of growth he needs.
Currently, Murray averages 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.1 steals across 22 games this season, with shooting percentages of 42% from the field, 27% from three-point range, and 76% on free throws. Although his shooting splits have raised concerns in recent years, Christensen remains firmly optimistic about his ceiling.
I said it at the beginning of his second season, and I’ll say it again: Keegan Murray is going to be an All-Star in this league. He’s a two-way player. His size and versatility on defense give him that upside. But to get there, he needs these reps — in real games, as the primary option.
Opportunities for Murray to Develop in the Final Stretch
With about 25 games remaining in the season, the Kings are positioned to challenge Murray by increasing his offensive responsibilities. Christensen underscored the importance of allowing him to grow, even if initial struggles occur.
Seeing him take on more responsibility offensively — even if it’s messy at first — is only going to benefit this team moving forward.
