SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden State Warriors have made a decisive move to include Gui Santos as a key component of their future by signing the Brazilian forward to a two-year contract extension. This announcement came Saturday at the Chase Center prior to their game against the Los Angeles Lakers, signaling the team’s confidence in Santos amidst a challenging season.
Gui Santos’ Development and Recent Performance
Selected as the 55th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Santos has appeared in 48 games this season, starting in 13 of them, while also spending time in the G-League to refine his skills. Over the last dozen games, he has shown notable scoring ability, reaching double digits in 11 contests with an average of 15.0 points per game. His efficiency is marked by a 58.8 percent shooting rate overall and 43.1 percent accuracy from beyond the arc. Alongside scoring, Santos contributes on the boards, securing 5.6 rebounds per game, and adds defensive pressure with 1.6 steals, all while averaging nearly 29 minutes of playing time.
Gui Santos Reflects on His Journey and Growth
During a post-practice interview on Friday, Santos outlined how his role evolved since arriving in the NBA. Initially a point guard in Brazil, he emphasized adapting to the Warriors’ system as a critical step, stating,

“When I got here, I was a point guard playing in Brazil, playing like a point guard, having the ball in my hand,”
Gui Santos said.
“Then I spent the whole year in the G-League just learning how to fit in the system here because my goal was always playing in the NBA and playing for the Warriors.”
This period of adjustment focused on defense, rebounding, and supporting the team’s star, Stephen Curry, especially when Curry was sidelined due to a knee injury.
Expanded Opportunities Due to Team Injuries
Santos credited recent injuries among key Warriors players as providing him with the chance to demonstrate his offensive capabilities. With Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green unavailable, Santos has been entrusted with a greater role in the lineup. He acknowledged this in his own words:
“Right now they give me the option or the opportunity to show a little bit more after we lost Jimmy (Butler),”
Gui Santos said.
“With Draymond (back) out it’s given me more space to show a little bit more of what I can do. I’m glad they’re trusting me.”
The Warriors’ Strategy and Future Expectations
Under head coach Steve Kerr, who praises Santos as one of the team’s top shot creators despite his unconventional style, the Warriors are blending veteran leadership with emerging talent. Santos’ ascendance offers the team additional offensive versatility and defensive intensity, crucial elements as they approach the remainder of the NBA season. The two-year extension reflects a commitment to integrating the young Brazilian’s development with the team’s pursuit of sustained success.
As the Warriors continue to navigate a competitive Western Conference, Santos’ growth and expanded role could prove vital in their quest for playoff positioning and beyond. The extension represents an investment in the future that might shape the franchise’s trajectory in the coming years.
