Gui Santos Signs Multi-Year Extension with Warriors

Gui Santos has earned a significant milestone in his basketball career by agreeing to a multi-year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, announced on Saturday morning in San Francisco. The deal, reported by Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, is a three-year, $15 million agreement that includes a player option for the 2028-29 season, ensuring Santos remains a key part of the Warriors’ roster as he approaches restricted free agency this summer.

During a season impacted by injuries and roster changes, Santos has risen as an essential player under coach Steve Kerr’s guidance. Originally a second-round draft pick in 2022 from Brazil, the third-year forward has transitioned from the Warriors’ G-League affiliate team in Santa Cruz to becoming a trusted starter who can close out intense games for the Dubs.

Gui Santos’ Impact as a Starter This Season

Since being inserted into the starting lineup about a month ago, Santos has averaged an impressive 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists over 28.8 minutes per game through 12 contests. His clutch performance includes two decisive game-winning shots—a fastbreak layup that secured a lead over the Phoenix Suns and a contested layup against the Memphis Grizzlies on home court.

Steve Kerr has praised Santos’ growth this season, noting his expanded role as a creator and versatile player.

“He’s taken another step this year, Gui has,”

Kerr shared with reporters following the Memphis victory.

“Last year, he was a very important role player for us. Number one on the team in plus-minus and after the [Jimmy Butler] trade, he really solidified that role. But now, he’s become more on-ball as a creator [and] a post-up guy. The step-through move that you saw was incredible.”

Kerr continued,

“He has the ability to play point guard when the other team is pressuring us. He’s really a versatile player and somebody we really value.”

The Road Gui Santos Took to Reach the NBA

Santos’ professional journey exemplifies patience and adaptability. Reflecting after a Warriors practice session, he emphasized the importance of waiting and learning to adjust to a new role.

“I think the keyword for that is patience,”

Santos stated.

He elaborated on his transformation from a point guard in Brazil to a forward who fits within Golden State’s system:

“Patience, because when I got here, I was a point guard playing back in Brazil. I was playing as a point guard, having the ball in my hand, and I spent the whole year in the G-League just learning how to fit in the system here, because my goal always was playing in the NBA, playing for the Warriors. And I asked [Kerr], what I got to do that. And he was like, all right, I’m gonna give you the way, like, you gotta play hard in defense. You’ve got to be crashing the boards all the time, and you just got to find Steph.”

Following this advice closely helped Santos earn more minutes this season after minimal playtime during his first two NBA years. Beyond his on-court development, his positive demeanor and constant smile have made him a favorite among coaches, staff, and teammates alike.

Grateful for the support, Santos remarked,

“The coaches here, the staff, and the organization, they’re always nice for me. They always help me with everything that I need, and right now they’re giving me the opportunity to show a little bit more because of all that happened.”

The Significance of Gui Santos’ Extension for the Warriors

By securing Gui Santos with a multi-year deal, the Warriors have locked in a player who has demonstrated steady growth, versatility, and composure in high-pressure moments. His ability to fill multiple roles on the court and contribute both offensively and defensively aligns well with Golden State’s dynamic playing style. As Santos continues to mature, his contract extension signals the Warriors’ commitment to cultivating young talent capable of sustaining their competitive presence in the NBA.

Given Santos’ trajectory—from adapting in the G-League to becoming a reliable starter—the extension is likely to strengthen the Warriors’ rotation and provide valuable depth in the coming seasons. Fans and analysts will be watching to see how he further develops and impacts the team’s pursuit of future championships.
