Lonnie Walker IV Stranded in Dubai Amid Middle East Tensions

Lonnie Walker IV, the 27-year-old guard for Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv, is currently stranded in Dubai due to sudden airspace closures triggered by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Walker had traveled to the region for a midseason rest before the demanding final phase of the 2025-26 EuroLeague and domestic seasons, but growing instability has caused major travel challenges for athletes and coaches alike.

In an update shared on his Instagram story, Walker reassured fans about his well-being despite the ongoing chaos at the transit hub.

“It’s been crazy, for real. I have seen it all at this point. I’m not going to get into all the details, all the stories that I have seen, or handling and dealing with, but I’m all good,”

he stated. Despite the uncertainty, Walker appeared composed amid the disruptions impacting international travel and security.

Walker’s unplanned absence comes at a pivotal time for Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv. The Pennsylvania native has been a key contributor in the current EuroLeague season, averaging 15.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Including his previous tenure with Zalgiris, Walker has appeared in 38 EuroLeague matches, complementing his extensive NBA career that featured 361 games with the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, and Philadelphia 76ers.

Heightened Conflict Threatens Tel Aviv Basketball Rivalry

The high-stakes Tel Aviv derby between Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv and Hapoel IBI faces potential postponement as the intensifying conflict with Iran disrupts the Israeli sports schedule. The game, planned for Thursday, now seems unlikely due to grounded flights and players unable to travel. As the teams enter Round 30, Maccabi holds a 14-15 record, vying to secure a playoff spot, while Hapoel IBI stands firmly in fifth place with a 17-11 record.

The ongoing tensions and resulting airspace closures in Dubai represent significant obstacles not only to Walker and his club but also to the broader European basketball calendar. How long these disruptions will continue remains uncertain, increasing anxiety among teams and fans alike as the season’s critical stages approach.
