Portland Trail Blazers forward Kris Murray played only four minutes before leaving during the team’s 135-101 defeat against the Atlanta Hawks. The team confirmed that Murray’s exit was due to an illness that prevented him from returning to the game. This illness is affecting several players throughout the current road trip, suggesting a contagious issue within the locker room.
Murray’s Performance and Role This Season
This season marks the best of Murray’s three-year career with Portland, as he sees increased playing time and contributes with averages of 6.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He has improved his shooting efficiency with a 45.2 percent field goal rate, although his three-point shooting remains below 25 percent. Despite struggles from beyond the arc, Murray influences the team’s effort through other aspects of his game.
He has also taken on a larger role amid injuries, starting 15 of 40 games played this season and starting the last four contests consecutively. His illness, however, underscores the physical toll the current health issues are having on key players throughout the team.
Blazers Struggle with Widespread Illness During Road Trip
Blazers acting head coach Tiago Splitter addressed the widespread impact of the illness, noting the diminished energy among multiple players.
We didn’t have enough energy to play,
Splitter said after the game.
Kris was kinda ill, Sidy was ill, DC [Donovan Clingan], so the energy was not there. They were fighting, they were trying, and they were pushing themselves. They were getting IV’s before the game and really trying to be there and fight for their team, but we couldn’t find that energy.
– Tiago Splitter, Acting Head Coach
This illness has clearly hampered Portland’s ability to compete effectively, contributing to back-to-back losses, including the previous defeat against the Charlotte Hornets. The lack of health and readiness appears to be a significant factor in the team’s current struggles on the road.
Upcoming Opportunities to Recover and Rebound
The Blazers will have two full days off following this game, providing a critical window to recover physically before continuing their road schedule. The team’s next matchup takes place on Wednesday at the Moda Center against the Memphis Grizzlies, with a 5 p.m. PT tip-off. Fans will be able to watch the game on Rip City Sports Network or stream it via NBA League Pass.
This pause provides Portland a chance to regroup and regain strength as they attempt to improve their performance in the second half of the road trip and address the challenges posed by the ongoing Kris Murray illness exit.
