Three-time NBA champion Udonis Haslem has urged Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić to stop complaining to referees if he wants the team to reach its full potential. Haslem’s message comes amid growing frustration with Dončić’s repeated protests over officiating during the current NBA season.
The six-time All-Star has drawn increasing criticism this year for his tendency to argue calls, leading to a buildup of technical fouls that have frustrated both fans and analysts. Haslem highlighted this issue ahead of the Lakers’ crucial road game against the Denver Nuggets, attributing some of the team’s struggles against top-tier opponents to Dončić’s on-court behavior.
The Impact of Officiating Disputes on Dončić and the Lakers’ Competitiveness
Haslem pointed to good habits and team cohesion as essential qualities of successful teams, underlining that the Lakers must improve these elements to compete at a higher level. While praising Dončić’s talent, Haslem insisted the star player must evolve by cutting down on complaints directed at game officials.
“When we talk about the Lakers not being able to compete at a high level with the good teams, the good teams have two things: They have good habits, and they have guys that have bought into the system and everything that’s going on. When I look at the Lakers — and this takes nothing away from Luka as a great player — the next step of the evolution of Luka Dončić: stop whining,”
Haslem said.
“Stop complaining to the refs. You’re not gonna beg your way to a title. You’re not gonna cry your way to a championship. As great of a player as you are, you are taking away from your game when you’re focusing so much energy and effort complaining to the refs.”
Drawing Parallels to Jayson Tatum’s Transformation
Haslem recalled a similar moment in the early career of Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, warning that excessive complaints to officials can be exploited by opponents and disrupt a player’s focus. He described how opposing teams would capitalize when Tatum lost composure during games.

“I remember this with a young Jayson Tatum when we were in those battles with the Boston Celtics,”
Haslem said.
“As soon as he started complaining to the refs, I would tell our young guys, ‘Now we got him,’ because it’s about everything else besides the game.”
“With these great players that you’re trying to stop, if you can knock these guys off their game for three, four minutes, just to focus on anything else, that’s all the advantage you need.”
Consequences for Dončić and Lakers’ Playoff Prospects
Despite Haslem’s warning, Dončić recently accumulated his 15th technical foul of the season during the Lakers’ 120-113 loss in Denver. That foul brings him one away from an automatic one-game suspension, with 20 games still left in the regular season. This disciplinary risk adds pressure on Dončić as he tries to lead the Lakers toward stronger playoff positioning.
Currently averaging 32.3 points per game and leading the NBA in scoring, Dončić’s behavior is under scrutiny as Los Angeles battles to hold its sixth seed in the Western Conference. Time is running short for both the star and his team to address the issues hindering their championship aspirations.

When Doncic was asked if he will commit to not picking up a 16th tech and avoiding a one-game suspension, he said: “We’ll see. I can’t predict the future.” https://t.co/zLG3XA2E3q
