SAN FRANCISCO — Cooper Kupp’s career took an unforeseen turn after the Los Angeles Rams released him following eight seasons and a Super Bowl victory with the team. His dream of spending his entire career in Southern California, chasing records and championships, was interrupted, yet this change opened a new chapter in his home state with the Seattle Seahawks, fueling his Super Bowl aspirations once again.
Though the release was framed as a cost-cutting decision, it reflected the Rams’ belief that Kupp’s prime years were behind him, especially as injuries and age caught up. Despite this, Kupp’s disappointment was profound.
That just didn’t come to a close how I’d have pictured that coming to a close,
Kupp said.
From Loss to New Opportunity: Kupp’s Role in Seattle’s Rise
Kupp found some relief in joining the Seahawks, where he quickly embraced a vital supporting role as a leader and experienced resource during Seattle’s unexpected push to the Super Bowl. Though painful at first, the move allowed him to transform adversity into motivation.
That was tough. There’s no doubt about it,
Kupp acknowledged.
You spend so much time together, so much time in one place building so much, and to have that taken away was difficult.

Rather than dwell on the Rams’ decision, Kupp focused on his belief in himself. He refused to let others define his legacy, determined to prove his skill and leadership still had value.
I wasn’t going to allow someone else to say who I was,
Kupp declared.
I don’t doubt who I am. I believed in myself all the way through that,
he continued.
My belief was that I can still play this game at a high level and just needed an opportunity to do so.
Seahawks Head Coach Mike Macdonald’s Confidence In Kupp
Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald saw Kupp as the perfect fit for the culture he wanted to build in Seattle. Recognizing Kupp’s work ethic, leadership, and winning mindset, Macdonald promptly reached out to recruit him, emphasizing how rare an opportunity it was to add a player of Kupp’s caliber early in a new program’s development.
Whenever the first time we were allowed to reach out to Coop, I had him on the line,
Macdonald said.
I said, ‘Look, we don’t get opportunities to acquire a player like you,’ especially early in our program. What better player to bring in early than Cooper Kupp.
Kupp’s Contributions Beyond the Stats This Season
While Kupp posted solid statistics with 47 receptions for 593 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season, and added nine catches for 96 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs, his influence extends far beyond the numbers.
Notably, Kupp’s critical 13-yard touchdown late in the NFC Championship Game against his former team, the Rams, helped seal the Seahawks’ place in the Super Bowl.
To see him make plays in the championship when the stakes are highest was really, really special,
Macdonald reflected.
Really happy for him.
His role as a mentor to Seattle’s young receivers, especially standout talent Jaxson Smith-Njigba, has been invaluable in fostering the team’s emerging success.
Nurturing Young Talent: Kupp’s Mentorship Impact
Smith-Njigba’s breakout year, which saw him catch 119 passes for a league-leading 1,793 yards, was accelerated by Kupp’s guidance and leadership within the receiving corps. Kupp’s approach fosters growth not only among wide receivers but also across all phases of the Seahawks’ roster.
He’s like that with the receiver room. You can see it with the effect with a lot of our guys, like Jax, is obvious, but really the rest of our young receivers,
Macdonald noted.
And that’s rippled all the way throughout the whole team, offense, defense, special teams, all three phases. He’s helped me.
Embracing the ‘Process Over Results’ Philosophy
Jaxson Smith-Njigba emphasizes the importance of the philosophy Kupp brings to the team: focusing on process rather than immediate outcomes. Kupp’s attention to preparation and fundamentals has helped Seattle raise their performance level on game day.
What Coop has brought to this team, in his words, is ‘process over results.’ And you know, it’s not about, the game is the game and we’re going to be ready for it, and I’m going to give it my all each and every single game,
Smith-Njigba said.
For us, it’s about process, making sure we’re ready, making sure we know exactly where we need to be in the run game and pass game. And, you know, I think he’s brought that to me and the team, and it’s excelled for us.
Kupp’s Dedication to Leadership and Teammate Development
Kupp values the opportunity to mentor teammates who are eager to improve. His openness to share knowledge and model professionalism creates a positive atmosphere for personal and team growth.
It’s really cool to be around people who are open to want to learn and want to be better,
Kupp said.
And for me, I just want to be an open book. I know I’ve played a lot of football. And so to be around guys who are intrinsically motivated, that want to be better, that know there’s more out there for them, that’s something that’s special to be a part of.
Kupp approaches this responsibility thoughtfully, recognizing the influence his experience carries.
You don’t take that lightly, being able to speak into someone’s life, and they are asking you to. There’s something about the weight and the responsibility you feel being able to model those things. Knowing that I’m not going to speak over you and speak to you about what I think’s best for you and not try to model that myself. So I’ve taken that very seriously.
Looking Ahead: The Significance of Kupp’s Super Bowl Campaign
Cooper Kupp’s journey underscores the unpredictability of a professional athlete’s career, but his resilience and leadership have reignited his Super Bowl ambitions in his hometown. His ability to adapt, mentor, and perform under high stakes will be crucial as the Seahawks prepare for the biggest game of the season.
Kupp’s presence not only boosts Seattle’s chances on the field but also strengthens their locker room culture, potentially impacting the team’s success in the short and long term. As this next chapter unfolds, the Seahawks and their fans will watch closely to see how Kupp’s veteran influence shapes their Super Bowl quest.
