Devon Witherspoon and Nijeria McClain have been together since they were 16 years old, starting their relationship well before Witherspoon was selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Now heading into his third season with the Seattle Seahawks, Witherspoon is preparing to compete in Super Bowl LX against the New England Patriots on February 8. Their journey together highlights the challenges and growth they’ve experienced beyond the football field, with McClain emphasizing the need for independence alongside her partner’s rising career.
Adjusting to Life in the Pacific Northwest
Since joining the Seahawks, Witherspoon and McClain have made the Pacific Northwest their home, although the shift from sunny Florida to Seattle’s cooler climate posed an initial challenge. The pair gradually acclimated over time, especially after Witherspoon moved past his rookie year. McClain built friendships with other significant others of Seahawks players, commonly referred to as WAGs, which helped her feel connected within the Seahawks community.
This year is different. I think it kind of started last year, where the girls were meeting each other and kind of hanging out,
McClain shares.
I think it’s the best year I’ve ever been here for sure.
– Nijeria McClain
McClain’s decision to follow Witherspoon to Seattle coincided with her own educational plans. Having completed her associate’s degree, she enrolled at Seattle University to continue her studies, making their relocation a timely and natural transition for both.

It was just this fresh, new, fun chapter, so things just ended up working out so perfectly.

Balancing Personal Independence and Supporting a Pro Athlete
While devoted to Witherspoon’s career, McClain also emphasizes maintaining her independence, which she views as crucial for herself and other partners in the NFL environment. She recognizes the difficulty of remaining distinct amid the high profile and demanding life of a professional athlete.
When you’re around someone who is so high profile and so talented on a professional level, it can be kind of hard to separate yourself from their whole life,
she explains.
But I think that that is very important to do. I think you can become engulfed in everything that they have going on.
– Nijeria McClain
McClain stresses that having interests outside football, such as hobbies or work, introduces a different dimension to her identity.
Sometimes you get bored. They’re working, they’re traveling. So to have those hobbies or even a job, it brings out a different side of you for sure.
– Nijeria McClain
Community and Connection Within Seahawks Life
McClain appreciates the inclusive nature of the Seahawks organization, which extends its support beyond players to their spouses and partners. This community-building involved events and activities tailored for the women associated with the team, fostering moments where they can enjoy the spotlight independently of the players’ professional success.
You do get your moments to shine. There’s a lot of events and activities that are put together for the women outside of football, but still in connection with the Seahawks,
McClain says. I really do love that.
The Seahawks community does a really good job of also including the women and the spouses,
she notes. – Nijeria McClain
The Significance of a Shared Journey
As Witherspoon continues to build his career on the national stage, McClain’s role as his partner combines unwavering support with a commitment to her own growth and autonomy. Their relationship, rooted in years of mutual understanding and adaptation, exemplifies the balance required to thrive amid the intensity of professional sports. With the Super Bowl looming, their story underscores how personal resilience and community connections play vital roles in managing life beyond the game.
