Michael Penix Jr.‘s recovery from a torn ACL has raised questions about whether he will reclaim his role as the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. Although aiming for a Week 1 return, uncertainty remains around Penix’s position in the lineup as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
Atlanta Falcons’ Leadership Addresses Quarterback Situation
At a recent press event introducing Ian Cunningham as the Falcons’ new general manager, team president Matt Ryan declined to confirm Penix as the unquestioned starting quarterback once he recovers. When asked about Penix’s role, Ryan said,
“Neither of us are the head coach of the football team, so we can’t answer your question on that,”
according to ESPN’s Marc Raimondi. He added,
“I think as we start to get into this process and dive deeper into the roster — how it currently stands, where it’s going in the future — I think those are conversations that’ll be a part of it.”
Ryan, newly hired this offseason, has overseen major organizational changes, including the hiring of head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Ian Cunningham. With these shifts, speculation has grown about possible changes at the quarterback position for the Falcons as well.
Existing Quarterback Depth and Team Dynamics
The Falcons currently have veteran Kirk Cousins on their roster, signed to a significant but recently restructured four-year, $180 million contract in March 2024. Interestingly, the team also made a surprising move by trading up to select Penix eighth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. During that same season, Cousins was sidelined in favor of Penix, who showed promise over three starts at the end of the campaign.

However, Penix’s performance in 2025 was inconsistent. Over nine starts, he completed 60.1% of his passes, throwing for 1,982 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. After his ACL injury, Cousins resumed starting duties.
Kevin Stefanski’s prior work with Cousins during their time with the Minnesota Vikings from 2018-19, where Stefanski served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, adds another layer to the quarterback competition. Still, Cousins’ contract restructuring suggests he might be more vulnerable to being cut than challenging for the starting role.
Penix’s Rehabilitation and Outlook for the Season
Michael Penix Jr. has expressed optimism about being ready for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, but his starting status is yet to be determined. Team officials have praised his progress but remain cautious about final decisions.
Ryan commented,
“Quarterback’s obviously very important, and we’re excited about Mike and what he’s doing with his rehab. I’ve been up at the facility the last three weeks, and Michael’s been in there attacking that and he’s in a good space right now, so we’re excited about where he is at. But certainly, a lot of discussions for us about the entire roster.”
Implications for the Falcons Moving Forward
The Atlanta Falcons find themselves at a crossroads with their quarterback situation as they prepare for the new NFL season. The uncertainty surrounding Michael Penix Jr.’s ability to return as the starting quarterback keeps the team’s future direction in flux. This situation reflects the broader roster evaluations under new leadership, including head coach Kevin Stefanski and GM Ian Cunningham, signaling potential changes ahead.
How the Falcons resolve the quarterback competition between Penix and Cousins will play a key role in shaping the team’s offensive identity and success in the coming years.
