Carolina Panthers’ Tetairoa McMillan Wins Offensive Rookie Award

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year at the NFL Honors ceremony held on Thursday. The accolade recognizes McMillan’s outstanding debut season, where he stood out among five finalists including quarterbacks and running backs from other teams.

Competition and Voting Details for the Rookie Award

McMillan competed against New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson, and New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough for the prestigious award. While Shough earned the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Year via a fan vote, McMillan secured the official title through points awarded by the Associated Press in partnership with the NFL. McMillan amassed 445 points, including 41 first-place votes, considerably ahead of Shough’s 168 points and five first-place votes.

Background and College Achievements of Tetairoa McMillan

Selected eighth overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, McMillan came to Carolina from Arizona, where he posted remarkable numbers over three seasons. His sophomore year included career highs of 90 receptions, 1,402 yards, and 10 touchdowns, while his junior season yielded 84 receptions for 1,319 yards and eight touchdowns, earning him All-American honors.

On-Field Performance During Rookie Season

Throughout the 2025 NFL season, McMillan proved to be a vital target for Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, with whom he shares a history from playing against each other in California high school football. This pre-existing connection helped them quickly form a strong partnership on the field. McMillan finished his rookie year with 70 receptions, 1,014 yards, and seven touchdowns. His contributions helped the Carolina Panthers clinch the NFC South division title with an 8-9 record, although their playoff run ended in a closely contested Wild Card Round loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

McMillan Reflects on Chemistry with Bryce Young

Reflecting on their on-field rapport, McMillan shared with On3’s Brian Jones in December 2025,

“Obviously, just him being from Cali and then us playing against each other growing up and playing against each other in high school. So, just being able to finally be on his side of the ball and being able to build that chemistry with him has been a blessing for sure.”

Outlook for the Panthers After a Promising Rookie Season

In his second year running Dave Canales’ offensive system, Bryce Young showed significant improvement, boosted by having McMillan as a reliable target. The strong rookie campaign from McMillan is a hopeful sign for the Panthers as they aim to build upon their 2025 season’s progress heading into 2026. Their success in returning to the postseason and securing a division title underlines the growing potential of this young core.
