SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Mike Vrabel secured his second NFL Coach of the Year award after leading the New England Patriots to a stunning 14-3 season and a Super Bowl berth. Recognized by the Associated Press at the NFL Honors event on Thursday, Vrabel achieved this milestone during his debut year with the Patriots, turning around a franchise that had just two consecutive 4-13 seasons.
Vrabel, who previously earned the same accolade in 2021 as the Tennessee Titans’ head coach, is aiming to become the fourth person in NFL history to win a Super Bowl both as a player and a head coach. Notably, he could be the first to do so with the same team, as the Patriots prepare to face the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium this Sunday.
Patriots tight end and co-captain Hunter Henry reflected on Vrabel’s impact, saying,
“I can’t even put into words sometimes all he’s done for us, for me personally and just all of us as a team. He really brought us together, man. He’s kind of the glue that holds this together. Obviously, we’re a really close team, but he demands a lot out of us, and I think everybody thrives off that. He knows the right buttons to push. It’s been fun to be a part of, and I love playing for Vrabes.”

Drake Maye Comes Close in MVP Voting
Drake Maye, the Patriots’ standout quarterback, was a finalist for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year awards but ultimately lost to Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, respectively. The narrow margin underscored the intense competition between the two young quarterbacks.
Maye’s sophomore season featured leading the NFL in several advanced metrics, including completion percentage, yards per attempt, passer rating, QBR, and expected points added per dropback. Despite these impressive numbers, Stafford edged him out with traditional stats like 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns compared to Maye’s 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns.
The MVP voting was incredibly close, with Stafford receiving 266 points and 24 first-place votes versus Maye’s 261 points and 23 first-place votes. If Maye and the Patriots defeat the Seahawks, he will become the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl, breaking Ben Roethlisberger’s record, and the second-youngest to start one behind Dan Marino in Super Bowl XIX.
Coach Vrabel praised Maye’s talent and leadership:
“I think it all starts with talent. I think he’s extremely talented. I think he’s athletic. I think he plays the position athletically and that allows him to be accurate with the football, whether that’s in the pocket or extended plays. He’s a competitor. He’s always trying to learn. Continues to build and develop as a leader. So, his success and his performance is a large part of why we’re here.”

Additional Patriots Nominations and Coaching Honors
Alongside Maye, Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson and wide receiver Stefon Diggs were also finalists in major award categories. Henderson was a candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year, while Diggs was nominated for Comeback Player of the Year. Those honors eventually went to Carolina Panthers wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan and San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey, respectively.
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was recognized with the Assisted Coach of the Year award, underscoring the team’s strong coaching staff.
The Stakes Ahead in Super Bowl LX
The Patriots’ remarkable turnaround under Vrabel and the stellar performances by Maye and others place New England in an intense Super Bowl matchup against the favored Seattle Seahawks. The game, held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, carries significance beyond the championship trophy, as history could be made with Vrabel’s potential dual Super Bowl wins as player and coach, and Maye’s quest to become the youngest Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
As the Patriots prepare for this high-pressure showdown, the season’s honors reflect how close the team came to historic individual milestones, alongside the broader achievement of revitalizing a once-struggling franchise.
