Christian Jackson McCaffrey (born June 7, 1996) is an American professional football running back for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Stanford Cardinal and was selected by the Carolina Panthers eighth overall in the 2017 NFL draft. McCaffrey holds numerous NFL and Panthers franchise records and is renowned for being one of three players to achieve 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season, accomplishing this feat in 2019. McCaffrey was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2023 after leading the league in scrimmage yards and touchdowns, contributing to the 49ers’ success in the NFC Championship and their appearance in Super Bowl LVIII. A member of the McCaffrey football family, he is the son of Ed McCaffrey and brother of Max, Dylan, and Luke.
Early Life and Background
Christian McCaffrey was born in Castle Rock, Colorado, on June 7, 1996, to Ed McCaffrey, a former Stanford and NFL wide receiver, and Lisa McCaffrey, a former Stanford soccer player. He attended Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado, for his freshman year before transferring to Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Under coach Brent Vieselmeyer, McCaffrey excelled in multiple positions, including running back, wide receiver, cornerback, and punter. He broke numerous Colorado high school records, including career total touchdowns (141) and career all-purpose yards (8,845). He was recognized as the Gatorade Football Player of the Year for Colorado in both 2012 and 2013. McCaffrey also showcased his athleticism as a standout sprinter on the track and field team. He was considered one of the top football players in his national high school class and was selected as a 2014 U.S. Army All-American. Rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, he committed to Stanford University to play college football.
Path to American Football
McCaffrey played in all 13 games as a true freshman for the Stanford Cardinal in 2014, sharing the backfield with Remound Wright, Barry J. Sanders, and Kelsey Young. He made an immediate impact, finishing the year with 300 rushing yards and 251 receiving yards. His breakout sophomore season in 2015 saw him surpass Barry Sanders’ NCAA record for all-purpose yards in a season, finishing with 3,864 yards. He ranked second in the nation with 2,019 rushing yards and became the first Stanford player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season. McCaffrey was a consensus All-American and won several prestigious awards, including the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year. After an impressive junior year, he decided to forgo his senior season and enter the 2017 NFL draft.

Early Career (2017-2019)
The Carolina Panthers selected McCaffrey in the first round with the eighth overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He made his NFL debut in the Panthers’ season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, recording 47 rushing yards and 38 receiving yards. In his rookie season, he became the only rookie running back in NFL history with at least 70 receptions and five touchdown catches. McCaffrey finished the season with 435 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 80 receptions, 651 receiving yards, and five receiving touchdowns. In 2018, he became the first Panther to have over 100 yards rushing and receiving in the same game and set a franchise record for most yards from scrimmage in a game. He finished the 2018 season with 1,098 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns.
Breakthrough (2019-2021)
McCaffrey’s 2019 season was historic, as he became one of only three players to record 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. He finished the season with 1,387 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns, 116 receptions, and 1,005 receiving yards. His performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection and First-team All-Pro honors. In April 2020, he signed a four-year, $64 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history. However, injuries plagued his 2020 and 2021 seasons, limiting his appearances and production.
