Michael Irvin Urges George Pickens to Stay with Cowboys

Michael Irvin has strongly encouraged wide receiver George Pickens to remain with the Dallas Cowboys amid contract discussions. Irvin, a Hall of Fame wideout who secured three Super Bowl titles with Dallas, sees Pickens as an essential figure in restoring the franchise’s championship ambitions. Speaking ahead of Super Bowl LX, Irvin stressed the urgency of securing Pickens’ future with the team during the upcoming NFL offseason contract talks.

Lessons from the Micah Parsons Trade Highlight Pickens’ Situation

Irvin referenced the recent trade of star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers to illustrate what can go wrong in contract negotiations. He criticized the deal, claiming only Parsons’ agent benefited financially while the player and Cowboys organization suffered. According to Irvin, Parsons continues to fly back to Dallas, indicating dissatisfaction with the Green Bay situation. He warned the Cowboys not to repeat this mistake with Pickens, who also shares the same representation. Irvin said,

“Dallas has to do everything they can to retain him, but I believe — and I’m going to state this — George has to do what he can to make sure that happens,”

during a Radio Row interview.

Irvin elaborated on the Parsons deal, noting the agent secured a $47 million yearly figure in new money, despite the complex contract structure meant to spread payments across years. He highlighted the personal and financial drawbacks Parsons faces, including leaving his home and potentially facing higher state taxes, despite earning less than intended. His message to Pickens was clear:

Pickens’ Breakout Season Raises Stakes for New Contract

George Pickens showcased a career-best performance in the 2025 season for the Cowboys, registering 93 receptions, 1,429 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns. These standout numbers positioned Dallas as a potential Super Bowl contender, elevating Pickens’ value heading into free agency. Originally drafted in the second round by Pittsburgh in 2022, Pickens experienced a resurgence in Dallas after overcoming earlier challenges with the Steelers. Now, as his rookie deal expires, he faces a significant payday estimated at more than $25 million annually, with a franchise tag potentially guaranteeing over $28 million.

Fellow Cowboys Pro Bowl wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is set for a $25 million base salary in 2026, while quarterback Dak Prescott, offensive lineman Tyler Smith, and defensive tackle Kenny Clark are among other high-cost players on Dallas’ roster. Despite these financial challenges, Irvin emphasized that letting Pickens leave would be unthinkable for the team’s future.

Irvin Stresses Mutual Responsibility in Contract Talks

Michael Irvin emphasized that both the Cowboys and Pickens must work together to secure the wide receiver’s continued presence. He warned against allowing the agent’s interests to overshadow Pickens’ career priorities, urging the player to take control.

“Say, ‘I’m not leaving Dallas. I’ve been looking for a quarterback and waiting to have this kind of season all my career and I had it. Now that I’ve found it, I’m not letting nobody make me leave Dallas.’

You’ll get a great deal and you’ll have a great career. But the player has to also step up to make sure that happens.”

Irvin also called ending Pickens’ tenure with Dallas “stupid on every side,” warning that relocating him to a team lacking a strong quarterback could jeopardize his progress and family stability. He said,

“You can’t tell me you care about his kid and then send him someplace that doesn’t have a quarterback, where you don’t know what what kind of way it’s going to work out.”

He further underscored the importance of the player prioritizing his own interests over negotiating tactics:

“This kid has had some things going on, and now he’s finally found a home. We’ve got to get this thing about the player, and the player has to make sure it’s about him and not the agent.”

The Impact of Retaining Pickens on Dallas’ Championship Aspirations

Keeping George Pickens under contract is viewed as critical to Dallas’ ambitions to reclaim Super Bowl success. After a season that elevated him to star wideout status, Pickens has earned a prominent role alongside key teammates like Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. Michael Irvin’s passionate plea reflects the urgency and tension surrounding the Cowboys’ contract strategy given the financial pressures from multiple high-value players on the roster.

Dallas’ ability to negotiate effectively with Pickens will likely influence their competitiveness in the coming seasons. Losing him could replicate the setbacks experienced with the Micah Parsons trade, which Irvin regards as detrimental. As contract talks intensify during the offseason, both sides face critical decisions that will shape the franchise’s trajectory for years ahead.
