Von Miller’s Denver Return Could End His Hall of Fame Chance

On February 7, Von Miller marks the tenth anniversary of his dominant Super Bowl performance, yet he remains active in professional football. Although his current role in the NFL has shifted from his younger years, Miller demonstrated he can still contribute effectively in 2025. However, questions persist about how far his remaining skills will carry him, especially regarding a possible return to the Denver Broncos.

Miller has hinted at interest in rejoining the Broncos for the 2026 season, but insiders doubt the fit will be ideal. Mike Klis, a reputable Broncos expert, expressed concerns that a reunion might not only fail but also jeopardize Miller’s Hall of Fame prospects. Klis told Sportskeeda that the dynamic between Miller and Broncos head coach Sean Payton complicates the possibility.

“I just think it’s Sean Payton’s team, and he likes a certain type of player,” Klis said. “I think Von is so big. He’s such a big personality; he’s got a big brand. He kind of owns the room that he’s in, and I’m not sure – Sean Payton kind of owns the room he’s in for different reasons, so I’m not sure that would be a fit between Sean Payton and Von Miller.

“I hope Von plays one more year. It sounds like he wants to play one more year, I’m just not sure, plus the Broncos got (Jonathan) Cooper and (Nik) Bonitto for a couple more years. They got Jonah Elliss for a couple more years. It would be tough to be a Hall of Famer and be a No. 4 outside linebacker, which is what Von would be with the Broncos.”

Von Miller’s Recent Performance and Contract Status

In 2025, Miller recorded nine sacks, marking his highest single-season total since his departure from the Broncos to the Rams in 2021. That season also saw him participate in at least 16 games, his first time doing so since 2018. This resurgence has improved his market value, positioning him as an attractive option for teams seeking an experienced pass rusher.

Currently, Miller is concluding a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders worth $6.1 million, which will expire in March 2026, making him a free agent. His recent production suggests several NFL teams might pursue him aggressively in free agency to bolster their pass rush capabilities.

Teams That Could Pursue Von Miller in 2026

Miller’s ability to sack the quarterback continues to draw attention, with his nine sacks in 2025 hypothetically adding nearly half of the San Francisco 49ers’ total sacks that year. The 49ers could be motivated to enhance their defensive line by bringing Miller aboard for the next season.

The Baltimore Ravens also represent a potential destination due to their weak pass rush performance. They ranked near the bottom of the league in sacks, trailing only the New York Jets and the 49ers heading into the 2026 season.

Additionally, the Carolina Panthers might seek Miller’s talents. Having recorded just 30 sacks in 2025—less than half of what the Broncos achieved—the Panthers are in need of proven pass rushers to improve their defense.

What Miller’s Next Move Could Mean for His Legacy

Miller’s potential return to Denver is clouded by internal team dynamics and a shifting roster, with younger players such as Jonathan Cooper, Nik Bonitto, and Jonah Elliss already filling key linebacker roles. A reduced role for Miller, especially as a fourth outside linebacker, could affect his standing among Hall of Fame voters, according to Klis.

The challenge for Miller lies not only in finding a team where his skills fit but also in securing a position that allows him to demonstrate his enduring value. While he clearly wants to continue playing, the choices he makes now could influence whether his career concludes with the accolades fitting his impact on the game.
