Michael Penix Jr. Opens Up on First Call with Coach Stefanski

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. recently shared his thoughts on the first conversation he had with the team’s new head coach, Kevin Stefanski. Stefanski was appointed as the Falcons’ head coach in January, stepping in after Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot were both dismissed on January 4. Penix expressed how the interaction impressed him, highlighting Stefanski’s approach that went beyond football.

During an interview on the Up & Adams Show, Penix said,

“It felt great. For me, I am a family oriented guy and I love my family and the people around me. … He asked me about my family and I was excited to hear him ask me about that, and it wasn’t just straight to football. He wanted to really get to know me as a person.”

This personal angle, Penix noted, showed Stefanski’s genuine interest in building a strong connection with his players.

Expectations for Falcons’ Offensive Strategy Under Stefanski

Beyond the personal rapport, Penix expressed eagerness about how Stefanski’s offensive system could enhance his performance on the field. The quarterback spoke optimistically about the new direction and how it aligns with his style of play. He added,

“I’m very excited. I hear nothing but great things about the offense,”

he said.

“I hear that this offense is going to bring the best out of me and allow me to play very good football, so I look forward to it.”

Penix’s confidence in the upcoming offensive scheme suggests a promising chapter for the Falcons’ attack.

Update on Michael Penix Jr.’s Injury Recovery and Return Timeline

Michael Penix Jr.’s 2025 season was cut short in November due to a severe injury. Speaking with Kay Adams on the show, he provided insight into his current recovery status and plans moving forward. He confirmed steady progress in his rehabilitation, stating,

“I am doing real good right now. I just met with my doctor… We are starting to get things going. I am doing a lot of strengthening and stuff right now. I know I will be back and ready whenever the time comes.”

Having gone through similar injury recoveries before, Penix shared his understanding of the process and his readiness to follow through, saying,

“I knew what to expect. This is my third time going through it now, so I kind of knew what to expect. I knew how to attack the rehab process so that I can be better.”

He has identified Week 1 of the upcoming season as his target for returning to active play. Before his injury, Penix completed the 2025 season with a 3-6 record, passing for 1,982 yards and recording nine touchdowns.

Looking Ahead: What This Means for Penix and the Falcons

With Kevin Stefanski’s arrival and Penix’s commitment to recovery, the Falcons aim to overcome previous challenges that have hindered both coach and quarterback in past campaigns. Stefanski, who was previously the head coach for the Cleveland Browns, will seek to foster a more successful partnership with Penix to improve the Falcons’ performance. Penix hopes to fully realize his potential under Stefanski’s guidance, signaling an intense yet hopeful outlook for the team as they prepare for the new NFL season.
