Justin Jefferson Says McCarthy Must Learn to Play With the Best

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy faced a challenging 2025 season plagued by injuries, leading to doubts about his readiness as the team’s starting quarterback and the franchise’s future. During an interview on Saturday with Yahoo Sports, Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson expressed his belief in McCarthy’s potential, emphasizing the need for patience as McCarthy develops his skills.

Jefferson acknowledged the many factors involved in the team’s performance and stressed that improving chemistry and experience with McCarthy is essential for success. He said,

“I don’t know. I don’t have the answer to that question,” Jefferson said. “It’s a lot of pieces that’s going into the puzzle that you kind of got to slowly put it one by one. Obviously, the quarterback is the main question that everybody is asking and the question that they’ve been asking all season.”

“Obviously, J.J’s first year, not really being able to play for his first year. He got injured. So, people just need to give him a little bit of patience, have a little bit of patience for him. It’s a process he needs to go through. He needs to learn this game. He need to learn playing with the best receiver in the game. He need to learn how to manage that offense. It comes with time. It comes with preparation.”

McCarthy’s Injury-Plagued Seasons and Team’s Quarterback Decisions

McCarthy was sidelined for his entire rookie season in 2024 after a season-ending injury. That year, Sam Darnold stepped in to help the Vikings reach the wild-card round of the playoffs, but the team chose not to retain him for the 2025 season, opting instead to start McCarthy.

Unfortunately, McCarthy’s injuries continued, limiting him to only 10 games in 2025. During those games, he passed for 1,632 yards and 11 touchdowns, but the Vikings finished with a 9-8 record and did not qualify for the postseason. With these setbacks, the uncertain future of McCarthy as the franchise quarterback became a hot topic among fans and analysts.

According to The Athletic’s Diana Russini, the Vikings are considering bringing in a veteran quarterback to compete for the starting role next season. One candidate reportedly under consideration is former Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, who would reunite with head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Cousins played for the Vikings from 2018 through 2023 before signing a four-year, $180 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons in 2024. This past season, he served as the backup to the Falcons’ first-round pick, Michael Penix Jr.

Justin Jefferson Reflects on His Own Challenges and McCarthy’s Impact

Justin Jefferson’s performance in 2025 also saw a downturn. After surpassing 1,500 receiving yards in 2024, his yardage dropped to 1,048 with just two touchdowns the following year. On a recent episode of First Things First, Jefferson linked the struggles in his production to the challenges faced at quarterback.

“A lot of people bas it off the quarterback play. Just different things that really go into my position,” Jefferson said. “Obviously, I’ve got to rely on, and I got to depend on a lot of people in order for me to get the ball. If I don’t have an elite quarterback that’s throwing me the ball the entire year, then it’s a little bit difficult to be in those conversations.”

“Having a young quarterback that’s still learning the game and still learning his potential in the league, you kind of have those difficult seasons which I had this past year. I still think that I’m still No. 1. I still think that no one in this league can cover me man-to-man. That’s without a doubt. My confidence level will always be high, and I will always feel that I’m No. 1 in my eyes.”

Jefferson’s comments highlight the challenges a young quarterback like McCarthy faces while trying to develop chemistry with top-tier receivers under the spotlight of NFL competition.

Looking Ahead: Vikings’ Quarterback Strategy for 2026

For the Vikings, moving forward into the 2026 season involves critical decisions about McCarthy’s role. The ideal scenario might be to have McCarthy continue his development while supported by a seasoned veteran quarterback to mentor and compete with him. Whether the team will fully commit to McCarthy as the starter or pursue veteran options remains uncertain.

Given the importance of the quarterback position in shaping the team’s success, Minnesota’s next moves could significantly impact its playoff prospects. The integration of McCarthy’s growth with Jefferson’s elite play remains central to the Vikings’ future offensive plans.
