On Sunday, Sam Darnold guided the Seattle Seahawks to a 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX, silencing critics along the way. Despite some personal disappointment with his performance, Darnold’s leadership and steady play were crucial in securing Seattle’s second Super Bowl title.
Darnold Acknowledges Criticism but Stands Firm
Following the win, Darnold addressed lingering doubts about his abilities. He told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated,
“We’re Super Bowl champs and people are still going to find something to say that I didn’t do tonight,”
highlighting the inevitability of criticism. He added,
“And I already know what I didn’t do. I didn’t throw it the way that I wanted to throw it tonight. But our defense had our back, and we made enough plays in the game. I’m very, very hard on myself that way. But at the same time, there is nothing that anyone can say that I don’t already know about myself. And people may demote my talent or my ability. I know it’s not true. I’m a heck of a player, and I’ve known that for a long time. And just to be able to put it all together, be on a really great team, great defense, and great coaches, it’s just special. And I think that’s why it’s special, is because of the guys in the locker room and the coaching staff that we have.”
Performance Highlights in Super Bowl LX
In the biggest game of his career, Darnold limited his errors while maintaining composure under pressure. He completed 19 of 38 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown, avoiding turnovers and taking just one sack throughout the game. His efficient performance, combined with a strong defensive showing by Seattle, ensured the Seahawks’ success against a persistent New England offense.
Darnold’s Journey From Draft Disappointment to Champion
This Super Bowl victory marks a remarkable comeback for Darnold, who was once labeled a draft bust after being selected third overall by the New York Jets in 2018. After a challenging start, including trades and brief periods with the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers, he found footing during a breakout season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024. When the Vikings let him enter free agency, he signed with the Seahawks, where he immediately made a significant impact.
With Darnold’s leadership, the Seahawks finished the regular season at 14-3, earning the NFC’s top seed before ultimately capturing the championship. His resilience and growth have now established him as one of the NFL‘s dependable quarterbacks.
Looking Ahead: Maintaining Momentum for Seattle
Validated by this championship, Darnold is set to maintain focus while disregarding detractors as he aims to help the Seahawks achieve consecutive Super Bowl titles. His blend of skill, experience, and composure positions Seattle to remain a formidable contender in the upcoming season. The team’s chemistry, strengthened by coaching and locker room unity, will be key factors in their pursuit of continued excellence.
