Kirk Cousins NFL Trade: Dolphins Lead but Vikings Wait

The Atlanta Falcons face a significant offseason question regarding the future of quarterback Kirk Cousins. After stepping in to finish the previous season due to Michael Penix Jr.’s ACL injury, Cousins performed above expectations and helped the Falcons secure four consecutive wins in games with no playoff implications. As teams begin to assess their quarterback options, interest in Cousins is emerging from several franchises.

Miami Dolphins Show Strong Interest in Cousins

The Miami Dolphins are among the front-runners to acquire Kirk Cousins, especially after sidelining their previous starter, Tua Tagovailoa, late in last season. The Dolphins head into the 2026 season with a clear vacancy at quarterback. However, caution is advised in their pursuit of Cousins, given the team’s broader roster strategy.

ESPN’s NFL insider Ben Solak shared,

“I like the Dolphins as a Kirk Cousins team, but if he prefers to return to Minnesota, it’s tough to find any ideal options.”

Solak outlined that Miami’s approach resembles Seattle‘s under defensive-minded coach Mike Macdonald: prioritize constructing a top-tier defense and rotate through mid-level quarterbacks aiming to discover a long-term solution. According to Solak,

“the Dolphins’ roster construction will likely mirror that of Seattle’s under Mike Macdonald: Build an elite defense, then cycle through midtier quarterbacks trying to strike gold. Miami should not be trading any picks, as it needs rookie-contract, rosterable players to fill out its depth chart.”

Minnesota Vikings Remain a Potential Destination

The Minnesota Vikings also represent a realistic option for Cousins, given his familiarity with the team and head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system. Following a challenging rookie season from JJ McCarthy, the Vikings may be seeking a more experienced quarterback as an alternative.

Ben Solak noted,

“Cousins is the obvious choice because he has scheme familiarity from his time in Minnesota as coach Kevin O’Connell’s starter. But O’Connell is a big believer in quarterback development, and I would not be surprised if he wants to go for a younger player to challenge McCarthy’s seat.”

Known in NFL circles as a quarterback whisperer, Kevin O’Connell has a reputation for cultivating young talent. This may mean Cousins does not align perfectly with Minnesota’s timeline despite his experience and earlier success with the team.

Assessing the Impact of the Cousins Trade Decision

As the offseason progresses, the Kirk Cousins NFL trade remains uncertain but pivotal for several teams needing a reliable quarterback option. While the Dolphins lead the conversation due to their immediate need, the Vikings’ potential interest highlights how Cousins could influence different team strategies moving forward. The ultimate trade decision could shape the quarterback landscape for the 2026 season, especially amid concerns about developing young quarterbacks like McCarthy and stabilizing rosters like Miami’s.
