The Detroit Lions endured a difficult 2025 season largely due to issues along their offensive line, which had previously been a team strength since head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes took over in 2021. Key losses such as Kevin Zeitler’s free agency departure and Frank Ragnow’s abrupt retirement contributed to the line’s decline. Adding to the uncertainty, veteran Taylor Decker is considering retirement while Graham Glasgow could be released, leaving the Lions’ offensive front in flux.
This instability might create an opportunity for Giovanni Manu to step up as a starter. However, Manu’s performance to date has not inspired confidence that he is ready to take on a key role this upcoming season. With the team pressing for improvement, the Lions appear set to move in a different direction in their offensive line overhaul.
Giovanni Manu’s Development Fails to Meet Expectations
Selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Giovanni Manu has struggled to establish himself within the Lions’ roster. He did not participate in any games during his rookie year, and though he earned his first career start against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 5, a knee injury ended his season prematurely. This lack of consistent playing time has hindered his development and ability to prove his readiness to contribute.

Head coach Dan Campbell highlighted Manu’s need for more practice exposure last December, remarking,
“I think for Gio, he needs reps. Practice reps, get out there against our defense…in real-time practice. It’s not a ton of them, and it’s not like training camp. But God, he just needs reps, man.”
Campbell’s statement, shared with Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, underscores the urgency to accelerate Manu’s growth, which has yet to materialize.
When Manu has seen the field, his performance has been underwhelming. According to Pro Football Focus data, he permitted two sacks on just 28 pass-blocking snaps and posted an overall grade of 42.2 over 62 snaps, indicating struggles with the complexity and pace of NFL competition. Manu’s background as an international player from the University of British Columbia further emphasized a steep learning curve entering the league.
Lions’ Urgency to Rebuild Offensive Line Amid Playoff Setbacks
The Lions’ current offseason decisions come amid heightened pressure to rebound after three disappointing near-misses — including a blown 24-7 lead in the NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers two years ago, losing the No. 1 NFC seed the following season, and last year’s failure to make the playoffs altogether. These setbacks have left the franchise anxious to fortify key areas to regain contention status.
Given these circumstances, Detroit is unlikely to rely on Manu as a solution at offensive line positions if veteran players like Decker and Glasgow leave. The team’s strategy will likely involve acquiring external talent capable of immediate impact, suggesting Manu’s chance to secure a significant role is diminishing fast. The Lions’ offseason moves may well determine that Manu’s tenure with the team is reaching its conclusion as they pursue players who can help them cross the championship threshold.
