Cooper Kupp Admits Nearly Botching Seahawks’ Super Bowl TD Play

During the Seahawks’ recent Super Bowl victory over the Patriots, wide receiver Cooper Kupp disclosed that a crucial touchdown play almost went wrong. Kupp provided insight into the chaotic moments behind Sam Darnold’s only touchdown in the game, highlighting miscommunications and unexpected adjustments.

Kupp described the moment on the New Heights podcast, explaining that the play call was muddled due to a problem with the wristband and an absent player, which resulted in the formation being reversed from what was originally planned.

“That touchdown play was almost a disaster,” Kupp said, via the “New Heights” podcast. “It was almost a disaster. Look, there was a problem, I think it was on the wristband. But we called the play. Jaxon is out at the time. He’s going through his protocol to get back out. The call ended up being like, the formation was backwards to what the play call was.”

Kupp and another receiver, Rasheed, initially found themselves lined up on the same side, which was not according to the intended design. Kupp spotted wideout A.J. Brown running toward him and realized he risked running the wrong route, forcing him to swiftly change his pattern during the play.

“And so we end up, like, me and Rasheed on the same side. I’m like, ‘Dude, no, you’re on the other side.’ But then, formation’s backwards, I see (Seahawks wideout) A.J. (Brown) running towards me. I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m about to run the wrong route.’ So I changed it on the fly. We got it done.”

Sam Darnold Reflects on Seahawks’ Offensive Performance in Super Bowl Victory

In the aftermath of the Seahawks’ 29-13 win, quarterback Sam Darnold candidly addressed the team’s offensive challenges. Darnold acknowledged that neither he nor the offense performed to the best of their abilities during the matchup.

“Offense again didn’t, I feel like we didn’t play as good as we could have. I certainly didn’t play as good as I could have,” Darnold said.

Darnold also discussed the significance of the touchdown and Seattle’s scoring strategy throughout the game. He noted that while the touchdown was pivotal, the team also benefited from the strong kicking game of Jason Myers, who successfully converted four field goals.

“I think first of all, I mean, we got down there a few times,” Darnold said. “Jason Myers had a great day. I think he kicked four field goals, so it wasn’t just, you know, one touchdown. Obviously, we’d like to get in the end zone more.”

Details on the Game’s Scoring and Critical Plays

The Seahawks’ offense stalled for the first three quarters, with neither team scoring a touchdown during that stretch. Seattle depended heavily on Jason Myers, who kicked field goals that pushed the Seahawks to a 12-0 lead heading into the final quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Darnold found tight end AJ Barner for a 16-yard touchdown catch, extending Seattle’s lead to 19 points and effectively putting the game out of reach for the Patriots.

Overall, Darnold finished with 19 completions on 38 passes, accumulating 202 yards and that lone touchdown. Seattle’s mix of scoring through the air and reliable special teams’ contributions marked the difference in their Super Bowl triumph.

Significance of the Play and What It Means Moving Forward

Cooper Kupp’s admission about nearly misexecuting the touchdown play underscores the improvisational skill and quick thinking necessary at the highest levels of football. The Seahawks’ ability to adapt under pressure was a key factor in securing their Super Bowl victory.

Sam Darnold’s honest reflection on the team’s offensive performance suggests an awareness of areas for improvement despite the win. As the Seahawks prepare for upcoming seasons, their blend of situational resilience and standout performers like Kupp, Barner, and Myers will be critical to maintaining success.

Fans can look forward to evaluating the Seahawks’ roster moves and strategies for the 2024-25 season, anticipating how this victory will influence their approach going forward.
