Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams completed a solid sophomore campaign in 2025 under new head coach Ben Johnson. Throughout the season, Williams received criticism from some fans due to his distinctive habit of painting his nails with various designs, a personal expression that has sparked debate.
Despite the backlash, Williams has remained unapologetic about his choice. In an ESPN interview last year with Courtney Cronin, he emphasized his commitment to authenticity and self-expression.
“Part of it’s just me being myself and just [being] unapologetic about it,” Williams said. “And you know, I’m not going to apologize about it. I’m gonna be me.”
Williams Addresses Nail Art on Maxx Crosby Podcast
On Tuesday, Williams appeared on Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby’s podcast and reiterated his stance regarding his nail painting. He explained the evolving meaning behind his nail designs, highlighting the messages he supports through this form of personal style.
“It used to be a little bit more like a motivation kind of thing,” Williams said. “Now, I just do cool designs on it. I do supportive things like mental health and suicide prevention numbers on it. I’ve done breast cancer awareness. It’s just gel on my nails. People feel a certain way about it and I give no fu**s to be honest with you.”
Williams also shared that his habit of painting nails started from watching his mother, who painted nails throughout her life.
Insight Into Williams’s Dynamic With Coach Ben Johnson
Williams praised his relationship with Bears coach Ben Johnson, describing it as unique and layered. In the same podcast with Crosby, Williams painted a picture of Johnson’s unusual demeanor and coaching style that challenged him but also brought out his best performance.
“He’s a unique cat,” Williams said. “Love him to death. He’s a unique cat in that he’s like a mad scientist that doesn’t speak what he’s thinking. You try and figure him out and I’ve gotten a lot better with it over time now.”
“Like, he’ll crack jokes but you’ll think he’s dead-ass serious and so you don’t laugh. Then he’ll say, like, it was a joke. You all can laugh.”
Under Johnson’s guidance, Williams threw for 3,942 yards and 27 touchdowns, while rushing for 388 yards and three touchdowns in his 2025 season.
Broader Context on Williams’s Career and Public Perception
Williams has navigated public scrutiny beyond his nail painting. His candid remarks about being true to himself resonate amid moments such as the controversial benching of Spencer Rattler during his college days at Oklahoma. Williams’s openness reflects a broader determination to maintain his individuality on and off the field.
As Williams continues his journey with the Chicago Bears, his performance and unapologetic personal style contribute to the evolving conversation on athlete identity in professional sports.
