Cowboys Cut Logan Wilson, Save $6.5M in Surprising Move

The Dallas Cowboys released linebacker Logan Wilson on Friday, just over three months after acquiring him from the Cincinnati Bengals. This decision freed up $6.5 million in salary cap space for the team.

Despite Wilson’s strong history with the Bengals, the linebacker failed to produce the expected results for the Cowboys after the midseason trade, which involved a 2026 seventh-round draft pick going to Cincinnati.

Wilson’s Performance Falls Short with Dallas

During his time with Dallas, Wilson, 29, made only 24 tackles and forced one fumble across seven games, starting once. His playing time decreased notably, as demonstrated by his absence from the Week 17 game against the Washington Commanders. Combining his Bengals and Cowboys totals in 2025, Wilson recorded 70 tackles in 15 games, starting eight.

Wilson, who served as a team captain in Cincinnati, had lost his starting position before the trade to Dallas took place.

Career Highlights and Background

Wilson was drafted by the Bengals in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft and quickly became a defensive mainstay. He played a significant role in Cincinnati’s 2021 campaign that culminated in a Super Bowl appearance, where they fell to the Los Angeles Rams. That postseason saw Wilson lead with 39 tackles. Over his career, he has accumulated 11 interceptions, seven forced fumbles, 5.5 sacks, and 565 tackles in 83 games, 66 of which he started.

Potential Next Steps for Wilson in Free Agency

Now a free agent, Wilson could attract interest from teams like the Buffalo Bills. The Bills had shown early interest in Wilson before his trade to the Cowboys, and both Wilson and Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen share a connection from their time as college teammates at Wyoming.
