Cleveland Browns defensive star Myles Garrett recently shared his thoughts on quarterback Shedeur Sanders during an interview, emphasizing what makes Sanders stand out. Garrett, who has spent over a decade studying and pressuring quarterbacks, has a deep understanding of the position, adding significant weight to his observations.
During the conversation with DJ Siddiqi, Garrett described Sanders as “pretty unflappable.” He added,
“The guy goes out there, he’s always himself, he stays true to him, and he’s just confident.”
Sanders’ calmness under pressure did not go unnoticed by the veteran defender, highlighting Sanders’ maturity despite being new to the league.
Rookie Season Challenges and Performance
Selected in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders appeared in eight games during his rookie campaign, throwing for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns and ten interceptions. While these statistics may not immediately impress, Sanders contended with significant obstacles. The Browns’ offensive line ranked among the league’s worst, and his supporting cast was less than ideal. Moreover, Sanders was thrust into action without first-team repetitions or the opportunity to build rapport with his receivers.
Despite these hurdles, Garrett perceives promising potential beyond the raw numbers. On a recent podcast with Micah Parsons, he stated,
“That’s who we’re looking at as the guy. We’re going to give him a shot to prove that he is the guy,”
followed by,
“We’re not gonna give anyone that title until they go out there and earn it. He was the last person to be on the field, and you saw some flashes. So, we’re going to give him an opportunity to show what he can really do.”
Outlook on Browns’ Future at Quarterback
Looking ahead, the Browns enter the 2026 NFL Draft with two first-round picks but face a weak quarterback class this year. It is widely expected the team will continue with Sanders alongside veteran Deshaun Watson for at least one more season, providing Sanders ample time to solidify his role as the franchise’s leader under center.
For reference, Sanders finished the 2025 season ranked 46th out of 48 qualified passers in PFSN’s QB Impact metric, with a score of 56.96. Although the grade is low, it underscores the uphill climb he faces as a developing player.
Garrett’s Role and Ambitions for the Browns
Myles Garrett himself enjoyed a standout 2025 season, playing all 17 games and setting a new personal record with 23 sacks. His performance earned him the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, and he secured a four-year, $160 million contract extension during the offseason. Garrett was also the league’s top pass-rusher according to PFSN’s EDGE Impact metric, finishing with an elite grade of 95.6.
While Garrett has achieved consistent success, his sights are firmly set on bringing a championship to Cleveland. He shared his ultimate goal directly:
“What’s next for me? Super Bowl,”
adding the aspiration of earning Super Bowl MVP.
Strong and reliable quarterback play from Sanders will be essential for Garrett and the Browns as they pursue this ambition in the coming seasons.
