C.J. Gardner-Johnson Signals Eagles Reunion Ahead of Free Agency

Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson has indicated a possible reunion with the Philadelphia Eagles as the NFL off-season and free agency approach. During a livestream with streamer Raud on Sunday, Gardner-Johnson was asked whether he would be open to returning to the Eagles, coached by Nick Sirianni. He responded enthusiastically, saying, “Hell yeah,” and added,

“Tell the boys to get with me.”

This signals a willingness from Gardner-Johnson to rejoin one of his former teams, highlighting interest in reconnecting with the Eagles, a franchise valued at $8.3 billion according to Forbes.

Reviewing Gardner-Johnson’s NFL journey so far

C.J. Gardner-Johnson was drafted 105th overall by the New Orleans Saints in 2019 and spent three seasons there, accumulating 161 tackles, three sacks, five interceptions, and three tackles for loss. In 2022, he was traded to the Eagles, where he played one season, recording 67 tackles and six interceptions.

After the 2022 season, he signed a one-year, fully guaranteed $6.5 million contract with the Detroit Lions but was limited to three games due to a torn pectoral muscle. Gardner-Johnson then returned to Philadelphia on a three-year, $27 million deal. During this second tenure, he contributed to the team’s Super Bowl LIX victory, amassing 59 tackles, six interceptions, and two tackles for loss.

Despite this success, Gardner-Johnson was traded in March last year to the Houston Texans for Keyon Green and a 2025 fifth-round pick. He started just three games before being released in September. The Baltimore Ravens briefly added him to their practice squad in October but released him shortly after. Gardner-Johnson then spent the remainder of the 2025 season with the Chicago Bears, appearing in 10 games, where he recorded 51 tackles and two interceptions. He is expected to become a free agent next month.

Gardner-Johnson responds to tragedy in the NFL community

On Sunday, the NFL was shaken by the death of Vikings wide receiver Rondale Moore, who was found deceased at home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Gardner-Johnson expressed his sorrow on social media, urging support for those affected.

“Losing another brother is heartbreaking man! Prayers up to the Moore family, and check in on your people frfr!!! We need more support than you think.”

Rondale Moore began his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2021 before signing a one-year, $2 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings last March. Unfortunately, a preseason knee injury sidelined him for the entire 2025 season.

Implications of Gardner-Johnson’s potential return to the Eagles

C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s openness to rejoining the Eagles comes at a critical time as teams evaluate their rosters ahead of free agency. With his proven ability in both defense and playmaking, a reunion could strengthen Philadelphia’s secondary and provide veteran leadership. Given his prior contributions to the team’s Super Bowl run, Gardner-Johnson could be a strategic asset for Nick Sirianni’s defense moving forward.

As the free agent market unfolds next month, the Eagles and Gardner-Johnson’s mutual interest may lead to negotiations that reshape Philadelphia’s defensive lineup for the upcoming NFL seasons.
