Cowboys Prioritize Brandon Aubrey Contract Extension This Offseason

The Dallas Cowboys have made extending kicker Brandon Aubrey’s contract their primary special teams focus this offseason. Following a standout year that earned Aubrey his third Pro Bowl appearance and All-Pro recognition, the franchise is eager to secure his services before he reaches unrestricted free agency.

Aubrey’s existing three-year contract, valued at $2.695 million, runs through the end of the 2025 season. The former XFL player has proven to be an invaluable asset since joining Dallas, successfully converting 36 of 42 field goal attempts last season, an 85.7% success rate, and contributing 155 points to the team’s total.

Prioritizing Core Contributors in Roster Planning

The effort to retain Aubrey aligns with the Cowboys’ broader approach of building around essential players. Recently, the team locked in running back Javonte Williams through a three-year, $24 million contract extension, which includes $16 million guaranteed. Williams delivered an impressive rookie season with 1,201 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

Stephen Jones, Cowboys executive vice president, confirmed active contract discussions with Aubrey, stating,

“We’ve been working on a long-term deal for some time,”

and

“We’ve exchanged offers and the goal is to get him signed. We love him. He wants to be here, so that part is accomplished.”

With Williams’ extension finalized, Dallas is now fully focused on concluding Aubrey’s negotiations. The team aims to finalize the agreement before the NFL’s legal tampering window opens on March 11 to avoid risks associated with free agency.

Maintaining Special Teams Reliability Amid Team Challenges

Amid a difficult 7-9-1 season under first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer, Aubrey’s consistent performance has been a rare positive for Dallas. His dependability provides important stability for a franchise striving to rebound after missing the playoffs in consecutive seasons.

The Cowboys also face several notable free agency decisions, including wide receiver George Pickens, who posted career-best totals with 1,429 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. However, Aubrey’s contract discussions appear more straightforward due to strong mutual interest.

Jones noted the team is prepared to use a tender offer on Aubrey if necessary but prefers to secure a long-term contract through agreement. Aubrey’s established reliability and commitment to Dallas make this extension a strategic move, emphasizing the organization’s focus on continuity and strong foundational players.
