The Pittsburgh Steelers once again face a period of uncertainty as they await Aaron Rodgers’ decision on whether he will return to play for the team. This offseason drama mirrors last year’s situation, leaving the franchise in a precarious position as options beyond Rodgers remain limited. The ongoing delay emphasizes how critical Rodgers’ choice is for the Steelers’ 2026 prospects.
Chad Johnson Highlights Urgent Need for Offensive Weapons
Former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson expressed serious concerns about the Steelers’ outlook if Rodgers opts not to come back. Speaking on his Nightcap podcast, Johnson stressed the squad’s dependence on acquiring additional offensive talent.
“They still got a long way to go,”
Johnson said.
“They need another weapon to go alongside DK Metcalf. I’m talking about a reliable option to go along with DK Metcalf. He can’t do it by himself…[Rodgers] gives you a chance to compete. Because if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t come back, oh my goodness. It’s gonna get ugly. It’s gonna be nasty.”
Rodgers’ Return Could Elevate Steelers’ AFC Position
Johnson’s perspective becomes more hopeful if Rodgers rejoins the team. While stopping short of declaring the Steelers as true Super Bowl contenders yet, he acknowledged their potential in the AFC and specifically the AFC North division.
“I mean, I wouldn’t say legitimate [Super Bowl] contenders,”
he said.
“They’re legitimate contenders in the AFC, AFC North.”
The foundation for success is partially established. The Steelers won 10 games last season and secured the division title, although inconsistent defensive performances prevented even better results. Rodgers’ rapport with star receiver DK Metcalf is a significant asset, and adding a dependable secondary receiver would strengthen the offense considerably. Furthermore, Rodgers trusts Pittsburgh’s offensive line, which is expected to remain largely intact in 2026.

Challenges Multiply if Rodgers Decides Against Returning
If Rodgers declines to come back, the Steelers face a complicated quarterback scenario fraught with risk. The free-agent pool is thin, with Malik Willis emerging as one of the few viable options—though his limited experience and likely high cost introduce uncertainty. Meanwhile, the trade market has spotlighted a trio of notable quarterbacks: Mac Jones, Kyler Murray, and Tua Tagovailoa.
Among the Steelers’ young players, sixth-round pick Will Howard represents a developmental choice, but Johnson doubts his readiness.
“There’s a lot to like about Howard, but he’s a sixth-round pick who’s never played a snap, so the lack of confidence is somewhat justified,”
Johnson explained. The team could also pursue drafting a rookie quarterback such as Ty Simpson in the first round or select talent in the later rounds as a long-term investment.
Essential Team Upgrades Remain Regardless of Quarterback Situation
Even with Rodgers in place, the Steelers must strengthen key areas on the roster, including adding a receiver, possibly upgrading the left guard position, and bolstering the running back group. Without Rodgers, the team’s outlook becomes significantly more volatile with fewer safe options at quarterback.
Johnson’s assessment reflects widespread unease about the team’s ability to contend without a reliable quarterback leading the offense. The coming weeks will be pivotal, as Rodgers’ decision will shape the Steelers’ strategic moves and their chances of competing strongly in the AFC during the 2026 season.
