Omar Khan Weighs Broderick Jones’ Steelers Future Amid Injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers must decide by May 1 whether to exercise the fifth-year option on Broderick Jones’ contract, a choice complicated by the rookie offensive tackle’s recent injury. Jones, a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, suffered a neck injury during Week 12 against the Chicago Bears, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season, which has raised concerns for general manager Omar Khan as he evaluates Jones’ future with the team.

Jones’ Injury and Role in 2023 Season

During his rookie year, Jones started 11 games at left tackle, stepping up after Dan Moore’s departure to the Tennessee Titans in free agency. Before moving to left tackle, Jones primarily played at right tackle. The neck injury sustained late in the season has led the Steelers to closely monitor his recovery as they consider the best path forward for the offensive line.

Omar Khan’s Comments on Jones’ Progress

Addressing Jones’ status at the NFL Scouting Combine, Khan expressed cautious optimism but emphasized the need for continued evaluation.

“Obviously, he had a significant injury and we’re monitoring how he progresses,”

Khan said.

“I know he’s working hard. It’s early in the process. That’s certainly something that we’re monitoring.”

Emergence of Dylan Cook as Potential Contender

Adding complexity to the decision is Dylan Cook’s rise as a dependable option on the Steelers’ offensive line. Cook, who began last season on the practice squad, made his debut in Week 14 against the Baltimore Ravens. Initially the fourth tackle option behind Jones, Calvin Anderson, and Andrus Peat, Cook’s performance has impressed the Steelers staff.

Khan praised Cook’s impact and work ethic.

“Dylan did a really good job for us when he had to come,”

Khan noted.

“He really did. I wasn’t surprised, because I’ve seen his work ethic and how important it is to him. He’s got that quarterback background. I think that helped him. I think he’s a good player. He stepped in and I think, played at a good level.”

Implications for the Steelers’ Offseason Strategy

The Steelers’ decision on Broderick Jones’ fifth-year option will influence their offensive line stability and overall roster construction heading into the next seasons. With Jones’ recovery timeline still uncertain and Dylan Cook emerging as a promising player, Omar Khan must balance risk and potential when finalizing the team’s strategy. This choice comes alongside other pressing offseason moves, including shaping the quarterback position and finding reinforcement at receiver.
