The Cleveland Browns are showing interest in Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson ahead of his NFL combine throwing session scheduled for Saturday, according to reports from Cleveland.com. The team is also considering free agent quarterback Malik Willis as they evaluate potential options to strengthen their quarterback roster.
During a press conference at the combine on Wednesday, Browns head coach Todd Monken shared insights about his familiarity with Simpson, which dates to Monken’s time as offensive coordinator at Georgia. Though Monken did not dive into technical analysis, he highlighted his personal connection to the young quarterback.
Monken’s Relationship with Simpson Highlights Personal Ties
Monken’s connection with Ty Simpson began before Simpson’s college career took off.
“I like Ty. I liked Ty when he was coming out [of high school],”
Monken stated.
“When I first got to Georgia, they hadn’t offered him. But I went up there and talked to his dad — in fact, his dad, Jason, is a Southern Miss alum and I was head coach at Southern Miss. I got to know them really well.”
The Browns coach praised Simpson’s perseverance and success at Alabama.
“Really fond of Ty. Obviously, really good football player. Fired up for him, because in today’s day and age, for him to stay as long as he did and then get a chance to be the starting quarterback at Alabama is pretty cool, that is really cool for him to live out his dream at the school he chose, three or four years ago.”
Evaluating NFL Prospects: Experience and Character Matter Most to Browns Coach
Although Monken’s relationship with Simpson adds perspective, the Browns’ decision on whether to draft the quarterback will weigh many factors. When asked about his evaluation process, Monken emphasized the importance of gathering comprehensive insights from those who have worked closely with prospects over time.
“First off, anybody that’s coming out in the draft, quarterback or any position, you’ve got to do a great job of vetting people that have been around them for an extended period of time,”
Monken said.
“Because 20 minutes or an interview doesn’t do it justice. I mean, you’ve got to make sure that the people that they’ve been around are able to say the words that you’re looking for in terms of how they carry themselves, how they are on a day-to-day basis, how they are around their teammates, how are they third downs, two-minute, critical situations. All of that comes into play.”
Browns Face Competitive Quarterback Depth and Future Roster Decisions
The Browns currently have a crowded quarterback roster, including second-year players Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, alongside veteran Deshaun Watson, whose status has been uncertain. Coach Monken indicated that he will spend the coming weeks assessing the team ahead of training camp, expecting a competition to shape the starting lineup.

“I’m excited about Shedeur, excited about Deshaun and Dillon,”
Monken said.
“I’m excited about the prospects, not only in free agency but also in the draft and we’ll see where it all falls. Ultimately you’ve got to do whatever you need to do, especially at that position, to put yourself in position to score points.”
Upcoming NFL Draft Sets Stage for Browns’ Quarterback Choices
The Browns hold three early selections in the upcoming NFL Draft hosted in Pittsburgh from April 23-25, including two first-round picks at No. 6 and No. 24 overall, as well as a second-round pick at No. 39. These picks provide opportunities to address the quarterback position and other key roster needs as Cleveland looks to build a competitive squad for the upcoming season.
With the NFL Draft approaching, the Browns’ quarterback situation remains fluid, and the team’s decisions in free agency and draft day will significantly influence their offensive outlook. Monken’s insights reveal a coaching staff carefully considering both talent and character traits as they strategize behind center.
