Brian Schottenheimer Confident George Pickens Stays with Cowboys

As the Dallas Cowboys prepare to begin contract negotiations with pending free agent George Pickens, head coach Brian Schottenheimer shared his hopeful outlook on the star wide receiver’s future with the team. Speaking Thursday at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, Schottenheimer emphasized his belief that Pickens will remain a key part of the Cowboys’ plans.

Franchise Tag and Offseason Participation Questions

The Cowboys are expected to designate the franchise tag on Pickens, which could value around $28 million. However, this designation does not guarantee Pickens’ attendance at the upcoming offseason program. The situation echoes last year’s contract discussions with pass rusher Micah Parsons, who initially reported but later held out during training camp and eventually secured a trade.

Schottenheimer Maintains Steady Relationship Amid Negotiations

Reflecting on past contract standoffs with other teammates such as CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott, Schottenheimer stressed his consistent support for Pickens despite business challenges. He said,

“You know, this is going to play out the way it’s supposed to play out,”

and added,

“GP loves football and my relationship with GP doesn’t change. Just like it didn’t change with CeeDee (Lamb) or Dak (Prescott) or those guys who were going through certain things. It’s all part of the process. It’s the business side of it. Hell, I was talking to CeeDee last night. It doesn’t change.”

Potential Impact on Cowboys’ Offseason and Future

The ongoing contract dialogue with George Pickens is critical for the Cowboys, who rely heavily on their emerging star receiver to strengthen their offense. While the franchise tag secures contractual control over Pickens, how negotiations unfold could influence team dynamics and offseason preparations. Schottenheimer’s confidence underscores the desire to keep Pickens integrated with the Cowboys, signaling a potential long-term partnership despite any short-term uncertainties.
