However, the team’s cornerback group also demands attention, particularly regarding Joey Porter Jr., who has just one year left on his current contract. Former Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden has advocated strongly for a substantial contract extension for Porter, emphasizing his value as a cornerstone of the defense.
McFadden Compares Porter to Top NFL Corners
On Steelers Nation Radio, McFadden highlighted Porter’s performance by comparing him directly to Christian Gonzalez, a rising star at the cornerback position. McFadden said,
“It’s time to get paid like one [of the NFL’s best corners].”
He pointed out that despite Gonzalez’s strong reputation and achievements, Porter posted better statistics in critical coverage metrics.
“You realize Joey Porter had better numbers than [Gonzalez], in terms of coverage percentage, yards given up, the whole nine. But he doesn’t get talked about like [Gonzalez] for whatever reason… He’s shown that ability to be that No. 1 guy… I really hope he gets paid… He’s deserving of seeing that new deal. If you’re Pittsburgh, he is your CB1.”
Statistical Analysis of Porter and Gonzalez’s 2025 Seasons
Porter and Gonzalez entered the NFL in the same draft class, with Porter selected first in the second round and Gonzalez taken in the first round by the New England Patriots. Gonzalez is regarded as one of the league’s best young corners, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and a Pro Bowl nod in 2025. Porter has yet to receive such accolades despite delivering comparable, if not superior, numbers in 2025.
Porter appeared in 14 games last season, recording one interception, 14 pass defenses, and one sack. Meanwhile, Gonzalez also played 14 games but had no interceptions and 10 passes defensed, four fewer than Porter. These metrics support the assertion that Porter’s skills are undervalued, especially considering his improved discipline regarding penalties in the latter half of the season.
Consistency Remains a Factor in Porter’s Development
While Porter showed significant growth and consistency in the second half of the 2025 campaign, his earlier performance was more inconsistent. In contrast, Gonzalez has demonstrated steadier improvement since his breakout in 2024, maintaining a high level through 2025. This consistency is a key factor separating the two as they continue to develop their NFL careers.
Contract Extension Considerations and Financial Outlook
The Steelers are expected to pursue a contract extension for Porter this offseason. Although elite corners command salaries around $30 million per year, Porter’s deal will likely be somewhat lower than that benchmark, yet still significant. Top-tier cornerbacks are typically expensive investments, and McFadden’s call for Pittsburgh to recognize Porter’s worth underscores the importance of securing him as their primary defensive back.
