Steelers Show Little Interest in Tyreek Hill Despite Need

After wide receiver Tyreek Hill became available following his release from the Miami Dolphins, many experts speculated that several teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, would pursue him due to their pressing need at receiver. However, recent comments from NFL insider Mike Florio on 93.7 The Fan suggest that the Steelers’ interest in Hill is quite limited at best.

Florio addressed speculation around the Steelers trading D.K. Metcalf, stating,

“Look, I have not considered the possibility that the Steelers trade DK Metcalf,”

as reported by Aaron Becker of Steelers Now. He further quoted Steelers General Manager Omar Khan, who said,

“I asked Omar Khan recently about Tyreek Hill and he said, ‘We are happy with what we have.’”

Analyzing the Steelers’ Receiver Situation and Hill’s Fit

While Khan’s statement may appear positive, it strongly contrasts with the reality of the Steelers’ ongoing need for receiver upgrades. The team has been seeking to strengthen this position for years, most notably by acquiring D.K. Metcalf in a high-profile trade last March. Yet, the trade of George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in May reopened questions about their depth at receiver.

The Steelers have also been actively interviewing several wide receivers at the NFL combine, fueling rumors that they may add a wideout in the upcoming draft. Reports from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac mention that the team favors rookies Omar Cooper Jr. and Malachi Fields, indicating a focus on internal development rather than veteran additions.

Despite these efforts, it is apparent the Steelers lack reliable receiving options beyond Metcalf. With unrestricted free agents Calvin Austin III, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Scotty Miller set to depart in March, and veteran Adam Thielen retired, the roster is thin. Roman Wilson remains the team’s highest returning wideout after Metcalf but recorded only 12 catches last season, insufficient for a WR2 position.

Khan’s comment about being “happy with what we have” seems to be a polite dismissal of pursuing Hill, signaling almost no interest in adding the former Dolphins star to their receiving corps despite the lack of alternatives.

Challenges Surrounding Tyreek Hill’s Future Availability

Even if the Steelers reconsider their position on Hill, they are unlikely to view him as a direct replacement for Metcalf. Florio’s initial discussion implied Hill was worthy of consideration based on his standout 2022 and 2023 seasons, when he led the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023, earning his fifth first-team All-Pro selection.

However, Hill’s performance has declined since then. Over the last 21 games spanning 2024 and 2025, he has not matched those peak numbers and ended last season on injured reserve due to a dislocated knee and torn ACL. Beyond injury concerns, Hill’s status is complicated by an ongoing NFL Personal Conduct Policy investigation triggered by 2025 domestic violence allegations, which may delay or limit his availability in 2026.

Given these uncertainties, teams—including the Steelers—are unlikely to view Hill as a top-tier wide receiver option. Instead, he would be considered a complementary asset able to contribute if fully healthy and legally cleared. The Steelers, for reasons possibly related to injury and off-field issues as well as their current roster strategy, appear uninterested in pursuing Hill even as a secondary weapon.

Implications for the Steelers’ Receiving Corps and Next Steps

The Steelers face a tense and uncertain situation at wide receiver, with limited experienced talent beyond Metcalf and unproven rookies anticipated to fill some gaps. Their reluctance to pursue Tyreek Hill, despite his potential upside, highlights the team’s hesitancy to commit to a player with significant injury and legal complications.

Moving forward, the Steelers will likely continue exploring young receivers through the draft and try to develop internal options while navigating the risks connected with marquee free agents like Hill. How the team addresses this position in the offseason will be crucial for their offensive prospects in 2026 and beyond.
