After a spectacular rookie season in 2024, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels looked poised for a record-breaking NFL contract. However, a difficult 2025 campaign has cast doubt on Daniels’ projected payday, complicating his path to becoming one of the highest-paid players in league history.
Jayden Daniels’ Rise and Setback in Washington
Jayden Daniels, selected second overall in the 2024 NFL draft, burst onto the scene as one of the most impressive rookies the league has seen. Garnering Pro Bowl honors and the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, Daniels spearheaded the Commanders to a 12-5 regular season and an appearance in the NFC Championship Game, marking Washington’s best performance since 1991. Currently, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott holds the highest-paid status with a four-year, $240 million extension signed prior to the 2024 season. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is seen as the likely player to surpass Prescott’s deal. Ginnitti’s assessment positions Maye and Williams as emerging candidates for contracts in the $65 million per year range after the 2026 season, given Maye’s recent MVP runner-up finish and Super Bowl appearance, alongside Williams’ leadership in advancing the Bears to the NFC Divisional Round.
This leaves Daniels without a clear path to a top-tier contract in the near term.
Challenges Facing the Commanders and Daniels’ Future Earnings
Though Daniels has the talent to rebound and potentially earn a market-setting contract, several factors diminish his short-term prospects. The Commanders are struggling to attract valuable free agents, partly because head coach Dan Quinn is entering a critical third season under pressure to improve results. This instability weakens the overall team appeal for high-profile acquisitions.
