Patriots Hit Roadblock in A.J. Brown Trade Pursuit

The New England Patriots have emerged as a prominent contender in the trade pursuit of Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown during the current offseason. On Sunday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler highlighted the Patriots as the top team linked to Brown’s possible trade, placing New England in the spotlight amid ongoing trade rumors.

Despite the interest, the situation has become complicated by the Eagles’ demanding price for Brown, presenting a significant challenge for the Patriots and other potential suitors.

Philadelphia Eagles Maintain High Asking Price for Brown

The Eagles are not actively pushing to move their primary wide receiver, A.J. Brown, but are open to considering offers that meet their high valuation. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, multiple teams have approached Philadelphia about Brown, yet the Eagles’ expectations remain steep, implying that only an exceptional deal would prompt a trade.

Both Fowler and Graziano indicate that the Eagles are not motivated by chemistry issues or internal friction; rather, they hold Brown in high regard and aim to extract considerable value if they proceed with a trade.

League insiders who spoke with Fowler suggest that a package including a second-round draft pick approximates Brown’s trade value, though the Eagles are presumed to seek even more in return.

Brown has demonstrated consistent production, reaching 1,000 receiving yards in six of seven NFL seasons and earning second-team All-Pro honors consecutively from 2022 through 2024. However, the 2025 season was less impressive as the Eagles’ offense struggled to match their previous year’s success under new coordinator Kevin Patullo. Brown’s 2025 stats included 78 receptions for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns over 15 games.

At 28, turning 29 in June, Brown signed a three-year, $96 million contract extension in April 2024 that commits him to the Eagles through the 2029 season, reinforcing Philadelphia’s position in trade negotiations.

Why the Patriots Are Interested in Adding A.J. Brown

New England’s pursuit of Brown stems from a clear need to upgrade their receiving corps, specifically at the wide receiver position. Stefon Diggs led the Patriots in receptions last season, but reports from the NFL Combine have indicated that the team’s confidence in Diggs as a primary target has diminished.

Acquiring Brown would provide the Patriots with another elite outside receiver to complement Diggs or potentially replace him in the starting lineup. There is speculation that New England might trade Diggs following a successful deal for Brown, although no explicit trade of Diggs for Brown has been reported.

Fowler suggested that the Eagles might prefer a trade involving other wide receivers from teams like the New Orleans Saints or Denver Broncos instead of a direct swap with New England featuring Diggs.

Stefon Diggs, turning 33 in November, posted 85 catches, 1,013 yards, and four touchdowns in the 2025 season. However, his postseason performance was underwhelming, with an average of only 27.5 yards per game across four playoff games and a modest 7.9 yards per reception.

Implications for Both Teams Moving Forward

The potential trade of A.J. Brown carries significant weight for both Philadelphia and New England. For the Eagles, the decision to trade a star wide receiver with a lucrative contract hinges on securing substantial value that could reshape their roster. For the Patriots, landing Brown could bolster their offense and address glaring needs in the passing game.

Yet, with the Eagles setting a high asking price and the complex nature of negotiating a deal involving premier talent, progress could face delays. The forthcoming weeks will be pivotal in determining whether the Patriots can navigate these hurdles or if they must seek alternative solutions to strengthen their receiving group.
