The Washington Commanders have secured two former Kansas City Chiefs players, blocking the Chiefs from reuniting some of their Super Bowl-winning talent. Nick Allegretti, a three-time Super Bowl champion with Kansas City, recently agreed to a two-year deal with Washington. Allegretti proved his versatility last season by starting the final two games at center for the Commanders, filling in for the injured Tyler Biadasz, who is now being released. Coming from the Chiefs, Allegretti has long stepped up when starters were sidelined, earning significant respect for his contributions.
In addition to Allegretti, Washington also signed offensive lineman Andrew Wylie, another former Chiefs player with Super Bowl experience. These signings ensure that the Chiefs will not have access to these players when free agency opens on March 11, potentially disrupting Kansas City’s plans to reinforce their offensive line with familiar talent.
Chiefs Prepare to Search for New Offensive Line Talent
Kansas City is facing a key transition on their offensive line, with the team informing right tackle Jawaan Taylor that he will be released if a trade cannot be arranged before the new league year begins. This move confirms that the Chiefs will enter the 2024 season without their starting right tackle, prompting the need to find either a starting-caliber replacement or additional depth for the position.
Despite this challenge, the Chiefs are positioned well for the offseason. Holding six draft picks—with the opportunity to trade for more—and freed-up salary cap space from planned player cuts and contract restructures, they have multiple paths to improve their roster. Kansas City’s offensive line already boasts several highly valued players, including Creed Humphrey, the highest-paid center in the NFL, and guard Trey Smith, the league’s highest-paid guard.
Other contributors include former first-round pick Josh Simmons and second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia, adding young talent alongside the veterans. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his offense have claimed championships even with less extensive lineman resources in the past.
Maintaining a Competitive Edge Amid Roster Changes
The Chiefs will need to adapt quickly to these roster changes while preserving their competitive advantages. The presence of accomplished playmakers like Mahomes and a strong foundation on the offensive line mitigates some risks. However, with notable players moving to the Commanders, Kansas City must identify new options to protect their franchise quarterback and sustain their Super Bowl aspirations.
This offseason’s moves will shape their forward strategy as the Chiefs balance youth, experience, and salary cap flexibility to remain contenders. Meanwhile, Washington has gained valuable assets that might shift the power dynamics between the teams in the upcoming seasons.
