Giants Re-sign Chris Manhertz: What It Means for Bellinger

Just hours before the NFL’s official tampering-free agency period began, the New York Giants secured a new contract with tight end Chris Manhertz, keeping him with the team for another season. The deal is reportedly for one year, aligning with the terms of the two previous contracts the 34-year-old veteran signed with the Giants.

The Value Manhertz Brings to the Giants’ Offense

Though often overlooked by casual fans, Manhertz plays a critical role in the Giants’ offensive lineup, primarily excelling as a blocking tight end. Last season, he participated in 209 offensive snaps and demonstrated exceptional skill in his blocking duties. According to Pro Football Focus, Manhertz allowed just one pressure in pass protection the entire year—his best mark since 2018, when he did not allow a single pressure in 345 snaps while with the Panthers.

His run-blocking impact has been notable as well, earning a 69.9 PFF grade thanks to his consistent ability to control much larger and more physical defenders. In addition to his effectiveness on the field, Manhertz’s reliability stands out, having appeared in every game during his two previous seasons with the Giants. Those 34 games included 14 starts, and as a receiver, he caught four of six targets for 37 yards and one touchdown.

Beyond his on-field contributions, Manhertz is respected by his teammates as a steady locker room presence. While he has not held official captain status, several players cited him as a leadership figure in the Giants’ locker room, as noted by multiple teammates in an SI feature following the 2025 season.

What Manhertz’s Return Means for Daniel Bellinger’s Role

The decision to retain Manhertz adds uncertainty to the future of fellow tight end Daniel Bellinger with the Giants. Bellinger, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft from San Diego State, expressed his willingness to return to the team but is also expected to attract interest from other franchises seeking his skills.

Head coach John Harbaugh’s offensive schemes have historically included a fullback role, a position Bellinger has experience playing but is not his primary focus. With a market that values his potential, Bellinger has openly stated his desire to become a team’s lead tight end (TE1), which could lead him to pursue opportunities elsewhere if he does not find a clear path to that role in New York.

Looking Ahead for the Giants’ Tight End Situation

Manhertz’s extension provides the Giants with a reliable veteran presence who anchors their blocking schemes, an asset that supports both the passing and running game. However, it also puts pressure on Daniel Bellinger to either adapt to a backup or special teams role or seek a larger opportunity outside the franchise. This move underscores the Giants’ commitment to maintaining a balanced offensive approach while navigating roster decisions that will shape their tight end depth chart in the coming season.
